New. Brit Gas hidden tariff - £130/yr cheaper AND boiler cover included We tell you regularly about switching energy provider, where many can save typically £300/yr on a standard tariff, but let's be honest, most won't switch. Maybe they're confused by the number of tariffs on offer, or scared of an unknown provider. So while this is nowhere near the cheapest, this week we're highlighting the top deal from the biggest name, and whether you're with British Gas or not, it's worth checking out. New. How to get the British Gas hidden tariff - save a typical £130/yr and get 12mths' boiler cover. This is its cheapest deal and with added boiler insurance - a no-brainer if you want to stay with British Gas. Yet it's not available direct - you'll need to go through a comparison site, so use our special British Gas comparison (for desktop), or if on mobile use our 'Top picks' tab and then the full market one next to it to see how it compares. Here's the key info:- It costs a typical £970/yr (incl MSE cashback) - £130/yr cheaper on average use than BG's standard tariff. But you must pay by Direct Debit to get it. - You get 12mths of BG HomeCare's basic boiler insurance. The firm says it's worth £42/yr, and covers your gas boiler and controls (there's a £99 excess for each repair). It expires after 1yr, although you can renew or upgrade it. For more options, check our Cheap Boiler Insurance guide. - It's dual-fuel only. So you need to be getting both gas and electricity. - It has £40 exit fees. You can take it with you if you move, but you lose the boiler cover. - New and existing customers can get it. Except those on prepayment meters or with an existing HomeCare plan. Yet you can save far more if willing to go elsewhere. The cheapest deals cost a typical £840/yr on average use, while the cheapest big name is £873/yr, incl MSE cashback. But energy prices vary by usage and region, so do a full comparison to find your cheapest. We also have filters to narrow down your options (with MSE cashback factored in if we can give it): - Use our 'Big Names' filter to only see deals from companies you've likely heard of. - Use our 'Top Customer Service' comparison to see the providers with superb service. - Check you're on your provider's cheapest tariff with our 'My Current Supplier' comparison. |

New. Half-price Power of Attorney - for some more important than a will It may seem a strange subject for the festive season, yet this is a family time. While presents under the tree are lovely, a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) protects you and your family at any time from the huge stress, hassle and cost if you were to lose your faculties without one. Full info in Power of Attorney. In brief... If you lose your faculties, relatives can't just access your money, not even to pay for your care or mortgage. One person develops dementia every three minutes in the UK, others lose capacity through strokes or accidents. It's often quick. And when your family are already having to deal with your condition, without an LPA, the only way to take charge of your finances is via the Court of Protection. New. £69.50 Which? Power of Attorney codes (plus standard Govt £82 registration fee). You've a choice over how to draft your LPA: Sort future medical care & more. We've focused on the financial LPA, but you can also set up a health and welfare Power of Attorney to give loved ones authority over your treatment, and a living will (officially 'an advance decision'), where you can refuse certain medical treatments if you lose capacity in future. Plus, while you're at it, consider making a will if you don't have one. |

THIS WEEK'S POLL Do you eat food past its 'best before' date? This week the East of England Co-op joined the likes of online retailer Approved Food and others in selling food beyond its 'best before' date to try to reduce waste (read more on what 'best before' means). When you find food at home past its best before, what do you do? Most of you WOULD cancel Christmas if given the choice. Last week, we asked if you had a CANCEL CHRISTMAS button that'd make the whole thing disappear, would you press it? From over 17,500 votes, a whopping 59% of you would. The only group who wouldn't were parents of school-age or younger kids - and even then, 35% of mums and 36% of dads would still give Santa the boot. Bah humbug. Full breakdown in Cancel Xmas poll results. |

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Q: My handbag was stolen on a train but I've just been told that because I don't have 'all risks cover' I can't claim on my home insurance. I'm so confused - what is the point of insuring all your goods if you can't then make a claim? Mrs Glass, via email. MSE Sam's A: Sadly, many standard home insurance policies only protect your goods while they're in your property - so if you take them out side your home you won't be covered. While it's no consolation in this case, to get valuables insured outside your home you'd need a premium policy or the add-on called 'all risks cover'. However, you may need to specify which items you want insured, and pricey belongings such as jewellery may cost more to insure. Hopefully this can help you in future. See our Home Insurance and 'All Risks Cover' guides for more help. Please suggest a question of the week (we can't reply to individual emails). |
'THE BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT I EVER RECEIVED COST £1.50' That's all for this week, but before we go... how much should you spend on presents? Of course, the most thoughtful gift isn't always the most expensive. We were reminded of this by one Twitter user who went viral with her heartwarming story of how a £1.50 gift she was given as a child is her most treasured. We'd love to hear your memories, so join our priceless presents discussion on Twitter. We hope you save some money, |
