The North Dakota Badlands stand out among the rest with their vibrant multi-colored layers of clay, sandstone, red “scoria rock" and black coal veins. These buttes and canyons are painted with silver sage, green junipers, poplar trees, bronze prairie grasses and a wide variety of wildflowers and blooming cacti.

As the largest unit, the south unit is a fan favorite. Just off I-94, its 24-mile scenic drive with spectacular views of the Little Missouri River caters to all motorists, including RVs and cyclists. The south unit visitor’s center includes Roosevelt’s Maltese Cross Cabin and the Painted Canyon Visitor’s Center.
Just outside the park at the south unit’s entrance, the old west town of Medora features the Medora Musical. This professional musical variety show is performed nightly through Labor Day weekend in an outdoor Badlands amphitheater. Play the nationally acclaimed Bully Pulpit 18-hole golf course and enjoy a variety of dining options including homegrown restaurants, local fine dining and the western style Pitchfork Steak Fondue.

Visit the north unit near Watford City off U.S. Hwy 85 to see a more rugged side of gorgeous Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Enjoy the 14-mile scenic drive that climbs the canyon to River Bend Overlook finishing at Oxbow Overlook. You’ll find hikes for novices and backcountry trails, horse trails, camping and wildlife sightings (be sure to keep your distance).
