UK REACH authorisation decisions

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has published decisions on 9 applications for authorisation.

The applications are for the time-limited use of a substance of very high concern (SVHC) under UK REACH.

Authorisations for the Aerospace and Defence Chromates Reauthorisation Consortium (ADCR)

Authorisations have been granted following review reports submitted by Members of the ADCR Consortium for the following uses:

  • formulation of mixtures with soluble sodium dichromate for use in aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains for surface treatments (Brenntag UK Ltd)
  • pre-treatments: deoxidising, pickling, etching and/or desmutting using sodium dichromate in aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains (Brenntag UK Ltd)
  • slurry coating using chromium trioxide in aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains (Wesco Aircraft EMEA Ltd)
  • anodise sealing using potassium dichromate, sodium dichromate and/or sodium chromate in aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains (Wesco Aircraft EMEA Ltd)
  • passivation of (non-Al) metallic coatings using sodium dichromate and potassium dichromate in the aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains (Brenntag UK Ltd)
  • inorganic finish stripping using sodium dichromate in aerospace and defence industry and its supply chains (Brenntag UK Ltd)

Authorisations for the Surface Engineering Association

Authorisations have been granted to the Surface Engineering Association consortia for the following uses of chromium trioxide:

  • hard (functional/engineering) chromium electroplating of engineering components with the purpose of creating a coating to meet specific performance characteristics
  • hard (functional/engineering) chromium electroplating of engineering components as part of an in-house production facility with the purpose of creating a coating to meet specific performance characteristics
  • surface treatment of engineering components, mainly for the aerospace and defence sector, with the purpose of creating a coating to meet specific and critical performance characteristics by means of:
    • chromic acid anodising,
    • chromate conversion coating,
    • passivation of metals and/or
    • sealing after anodising
