CARBON NEUTRAL FORUM: 2022 MADRID

The 2022 UIA International Forum taking place in Madrid, Spain from 18-20 May 2022 with the theme, “Affordable Housing Activation – Removing Barriers (AHA)”, will invite experts to address the issue of affordable housing by identifying problems and best practices and initiating a long-term action plan. In collaboration with the digital platform, ClimateTrade, the organisers of the AHA Forum, Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE), are also making a pledge to carbon neutrality by offsetting CO2 emissions from the Forum and all parallel events planned between March and May 2022. Tickets go on sale on 28 February.

CPH 2023 NEWSLETTER : FIRST ISSUE

The first edition of the UIA World Congress 2023 newsletter appeared in February 2022. It announced Danish architect Jan Gehl as keynote speaker at the UIA World Congress taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark from 2-6 July 2023. The bulletin also introduced Mette Lindberg, the new CEO of the World Congress Secretariat, taking over from Annette Blegvad, who has been appointed Global Policy Advisor for the World Congress.

THE INTERNATIONAL TURGUT CANSEVER AWARDS : RESULTS

Antalya Kepez Municipality, in cooperation with the Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey, has announced the results of the 2022 edition of “The International Contextual Architecture Awards in memory of Architect Turgut Cansever”. The Grand Prix, a career award, recognises the lifelong commitment of Dr. Rasem J. Badran (Jordan)to a contextual approach to local and regional identity. The International Project Award was awarded to Contextual Architecture in the Bremban Valley: A Contemporary Mountain Village by Magnati Lara (Italy), for embodying cultural continuity, regional values and local attributes in a globalised world.

THE INTERNATIONAL ACCESSIBILITY SYMBOL DESIGN COMPETITION 

On 18 January 2022, the UIA and Rehabilitation International (RI) jointly launched a graphic design competition for a twenty-first century symbol of accessibility. Competitors are invited to design a new symbol that better represents the variety of people who use buildings and other types of built environments. The winning design will be proposed to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for adoption as the new international symbol of accessibility.

AUSTRALIA:  SYMPOSIUM

The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) is hosting a symposium in Melbourne entitled "Lost Opportunities" from 18 to 20 March 2022 focusing on how unrealised, but significant projects constitute an important aspect of practice and a necessary tool for the development of important ideas. The event includes interventions by Australian and international architects. Early bird discounted tickets are available until 1 March.

BOLIVIA: SANTA CRUZ BIENNIAL

Organised by the Colegio de Arquitectos de Bolivia, the 8th edition of the Santa Cruz International Architecture Biennial will be held from 25 March to 10 April 2022 with the theme, RECONNECT. The Biennial, which began as a celebration of local architecture, later including regional and national elements, today promotes architecture from all over Bolivia. RECONNECT will examine post-pandemic architectural and urban trends.

INDONESIA: ARCHI:ID

The annual Indonesia Architecture Conference & Exhibition organised by the Indonesian Architects Association is taking place from 2-5 June 2022. The event encourages dialogue between architects, industry players and the construction industry in Indonesia and abroad. This second edition of ARCH:ID will illuminate diversity across Indonesia’s architectural mileu from provinces, cities to villages creating a rich tableau depicting this nation's life.

UNITED STATES: AIA CONVENTION 2022

The American Institute of Architects (AIA), which celebrated its 165th anniversary this month, will hold its 2022 Conference on Architecture in-person in Chicago, Illinois from 22 to 25 June 2022. Set against the backdrop of Chicago’s iconic cityscape, the event will include speakers, architecture tours, an architecture exhibition featuring 500 booths, seminars and speakers. Risk-free early bird registration policy is now open.

UNITED KINGDOM: RIBA PRIZE

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have announced Kashef Chowdhury/URBANA, winner of the RIBA International Prize 2021, for Friendship Hospital (pictured), a remote community hospital in Satkhira, Bangladesh. Awarded biennially to a building which exemplifies design excellence and architectural ambition and delivers meaningful social impact, the Prize’s 2021  Jury was chaired by French architect Odile Decq.

NEW ZEALAND: GOLD MEDAL

Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects has announced its 2021 Gold Medallist: Julie Stout of Mitchell Stout Dodd Architects. She is the first woman to win the Institute’s Gold Medal, the highest individual honour an architect can achieve in New Zealand, which celebrates outstanding contribution to the practice of architecture demonstrated through a consistently high-quality body of work over a period of time.

GOLDEN CUBES AWARDS 5TH EDITION: LAUNCH ANNOUNCEMENT

The UIA Architecture & Children Work Programme will announce the fifth cycle of Golden Cubes Awards in a webinar on 25 February at 13h00-15h00 GMT (14h00-16h00 Paris time).

The Awards will start with the virtual launch of the national and international nomination procedure, culminating in the Awards Ceremony at the UIA World Congress in Copenhagen, Denmark, CPH23.

UIA GREAT GREEN WALL INITIATIVE WEBINAR

Join us for the Great Green Wall Initiative Webinar on Saturday, 26 March 2022 from 14:00 to 16:45 Paris time. The event will review contemporary African cultural transformation in extreme environments such as that of the Sahara-Sahel region.

It will be part of a series of webinars that will explore opportunities and approaches to design that respond to climate change and the making of culture-sensitive productive rural settlements that take into account the need for affordable shelter, resilient dwelling and sustainable liveability in twenty-first-century rurality.
