CALL FOR PAPERS: UIA 2023 COPENHAGEN WORLD CONGRESS

The deadline for full papers and abstracts for the UIA 2023 Copenhagen World Congress is coming up on 3 October. The Congress Science Track invites submissions addressing how architecture can play an active role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Papers must address one of six panels: Design for Climate Adaptation, Design for Rethinking Resources, Design for Resilient Communities, Design for Health, Design for Inclusivity and Design for Partnerships of Change. Authors of successful submissions will be invited to present at the Congress from 2-6 July 2023.

WORLD ARCHITECTURE DAY 2022: WEBINAR

The theme for World Architecture Day 2022 (3 October 2022) will be Architecture for Well-Being. The theme is in line with the designation of 2022 as the UIA Year of Design for Health and the Union’s commitment to use evidence-based design to promote health in buildings and cities. Join us on Monday, 3 October 2022 for a webinar on Architecture for Wellbeing moderated by Ruzica Bozovic Stamenovic (Serbia) and featuring architects and experts from around the world.

LAUNCH: BYRSA ACROPOLIS & CARTHAGE MUSEUM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Expertise France, in collaboration with the Tunisian Ministry of Culture and with the support of the European Union announces the launch of the international one-stage design competition for the Requalification of Byrsa Acropolis and Rehabilitation of the Carthage National Museum in Tunisia. The deadline for submitting questions is 7 October 2022.

TUNISIA: NEW PRESIDENT

Leila Ben Jeddou has been elected President of the Ordre des Architectes de Tunisie (OAT) for a two year term. Graduate of the Institut Technologique d'Art d'Architecture et d'Urbanisme in Tunis and of the École Nationale d'architecture et d'urbanisme (ENAU), she balances her private practice with teaching architecture at ENAU. She succeeds Mohamed Sahby Gorgi.

UNITED KINGDOM: NEW PRESIDENT

Muyiwa Oki has been elected President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) for the 2023-2024 term. A graduate in architecture from the University of Sheffield in the UK, he is an architect at Mace Group, which manages large-scale infrastructure projects. A forceful advocate for social mobility, he succeeds Simon Allford.

FRANCE: ARCHITECTURE DAYS

TheFrench National Council of the Order of Architects has partnered with the French Ministry of Culture to coordinate the 7th edition of National Architecture Days (Journées nationales de l’architecture) 14-16 September with the theme "Architectures to live in". The event highlights quality housing at all scales, construction techniques and the use of ecological materials.

LITHUANIA: PUBLICATION

A joint UIA endeavour (Region 1 and Region 2), the Baltic Architects Unions Association (BAUA) published “Holistic renovation for modernism housing districts”, promoting quality modernist housing renovation. Featuring analysis and case studies, the publication follows an exhibition held during the UIA International Forum in Madrid, Spain,“Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers”.

UGANDA: SYMPOSIUM

The Uganda Society of Architects (USA) is organising its 14th Annual Architecture Symposium on 29-30 September 2022 at the Silver Springs Hotel Bugolobi. Under the theme, "Architecture for Health and Wellbeing", with event will address “architecture, health promotion and management,” from “spaces for healing” to “hospitals for the future.”

HONG KONG: EXHIBITION

In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) is hosting “Beyond Territories - Made . Make . Making”. The exhibition opened in Beijing (20 September – 5 October), and will travel to New York (10–25 October), and Hong Kong (9 December – 4 January 2023).

ZAMBIA: INDABA

UIA President José Luis Cortés was a keynote speaker at the inaugural Built Environment Indaba organised in Lusaka, Zambia by the Zambia Institute of Architects (ZIA) from 1 to 2 September at the Mulungushi Conference Centre. Under the theme “Bridging the gap for inclusive growth”, the event also included participation by officials from Zambia's Ministries of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development and of Local Government and Rural Development.

PORTUGAL: TRIENNIAL

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2022, Terra, will open on 29 September in Lisbon, Portugal. The programme consists of four exhibitions, four books, three awards, three days of conferences and a selection of Independent Projects. Curated by Cristina Veríssimo and Diogo Burnay, the event will address "climate challenges, pressure on resources, and socioeconomic and environmental inequities", incorporating a call to action.

ARCASIA FORUM 21 & UIA REGION IV MEETING

ARCASIA held its annual Council meeting in conjunction with the ARCASIA Forum 21 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from 4-9 September 2022 with the theme, The Future of Sustainable Urban Development, hosted by the Union of Mongolian Architects (UMA). The Awards Ceremony for the 2022 Arcasia Awards for Architecture took place on 6 September. UIA President José Luis Cortés, Secretary General Pei Ing Tan and UIA Region IV Vice-President Ishtiaque Zahir were in attendance. A meeting of the UIA’s Region IV took place in parallel to the events. President José Luis Cortés and Secretary General Pei Ing Tan were also conferred as UMA Honorary Members by the President of UMA.

UIA WORK PROGRAMME WEBINAR: THE CHALLENGES OF AFFORDABILITY

On 30 August 2022, the UIA Community Architecture & Human Rights (CA + HR) Work Programme hosted a webinar on Sustainable Housing for Resilient Communities: The Challenges of Affordability.Speakers shared experiences and innovative ideas and projects through the lens of UN SDG 11: “Sustainable Cities”, the objectives for which include providing safe and affordable housing, fostering inclusive and sustainable urbanisation, protecting the world’s cultural and natural heritage as well as ensuring access to safe, inclusive green and public spaces.
