LSU has a new football coach, of course, but the news hasn’t stopped. Late Friday night, our Wilson Alexander confirmed that strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffitt — who had worked at LSU since 2000, lasting through three coaching staffs and winning three national titles — was let go by Brian Kelly, the new man in charge. It marked the end of a long run by one of the most respected strength coaches in the business (if you don’t know the story of what made Tommy Moffitt so great, you should read the profile Wilson wrote on Moffitt here). The wasn’t the only piece of departure news. Another respected and beloved Louisiana native, receivers coach Mickey Joseph, is headed to his headed to his alma mater, Nebraska, after five years on the LSU staff. That made Joseph the first assistant coach from Ed Orgeron’s staff to leave LSU amid the transition. More departures are expected, be they voluntary or otherwise. Joseph will be the wide receivers coach, associate head coach and passing game coordinator at Nebraska. You can read about his new contract details, and LSU’s buyout, here. Somewhat ironically, news of these two departures came on the same day Rece Davis, host of ESPN’s “College DameDay,” told our Scott Rabalais he believes LSU will have stability, not chaos, under Kelly. You can read more about what Davis and analysts Roman Harper and David Pollack had to say about the Kelly hire here. Elsewhere … Scott Rabalais is in Atlanta to cover Saturday’s SEC championship game. He breaks down the Georgia-Alabama matchup here. Rabalais also wonders what life will be like for Kirby Smart & Co. if they can slay the crimson giant and head into the College Football Playoff as the clear favorite to win a national title.
