Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Anderson Cooper

CNN's Anderson Cooper interviewed former president Barack Obama Monday and was able to generate news and social media buzz, even with a more dramatic interview unfolding (see A Block below) sucking up some oxygen.

Cooper's questions about the era of Donald Trump, race relations in America, and the Capitol insurrection made it must see.

“You write about Sarah Palin – about her brief ascendancy – and you talking about ‘dark spirits that had long been lurking on the edges of the Republican Party coming center stage.’ Did you ever think it would get this dark?”

Great question. Fascinating answer.

Cooper also touched on the former president’s reflections on race in America during and after his time in office.

The former president spoke about his experiences, including the "firestorm" following his saying the police "acted stupidly" in arresting Henry Louis Gates. But his commentary about "certain right-wing media venues" became the stuff of Twitter trends.

A good interview with the right questions.

MEDIA LOSER:
Matt Gaetz

Rep. Matt Gaetz, who is reportedly the subject of a federal investigation trying to determine whether he had sex with a minor, sought a job with Newsmax earlier this year and was rebuffed. A spokesperson for Newsmax, a conservative media outlet, told Reuters, “Newsmax has had no plans to hire Rep. Gaetz.”

In March, Axios reported that Gaetz was considering leaving Congress to pursue a career in television at Newsmax. At the time, Mediaite was told by a Newsmax spokesperson the company does not comment on talent discussions.

Last week it was reported that Gaetz is also being investigated for possible obstruction of justice. When asked if he was concerned about whether he’d be indicted, the Florida congressman simply replied, “No.”

Gaetz has denied wrongdoing and said he’s been “canceled,” and is a “wanted man by the deep state.”

Gaetz has signaled his interest in media punditry before, and making the conservative media rounds has been a priority of his time in D.C. So it's a pretty big hit for him to take, then, to be canceled by the non-deep-state, too.

Vice President Abroad

"Do Not Come": Vice President Kamala Harris is in Guatemala and has been making plenty of news.

At a joint press conference with President Alejandro Giammattei where the two talked about the U.S. border and immigration, the vice president said anyone thinking about making the dangerous trek should not come.

"Do not come. The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our border," Harris warned. "And I believe, if you come to our border, you will be turned back."

"We’ve Been to the Border":  The dramatic increase in migration from Central America to the U.S. border with Mexico wasn't just the topic at the joint presser. In a sit down interview from Guatemala, NBC's Lester Holt asked why Harris has not visited the U.S. border itself to witness what is going on.

“At some point, you know, we are going to the border. We’ve been to the border. So this whole thing about the border. We’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border,” Harris replied.

“You haven’t been to the border,” Holt pointed out.

“And I haven’t been to Europe,” Harris said with a laugh.

"Period": : The Vice President was also confronted by reporters with criticism from Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticism over the "do not come" remarks.

"Why did you emphasize that people shouldn’t come? AOC is now being critical of that, sort of, emphasis that you made.” Her answer was simple and direct. If not addressing any of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez's specific concerns.

Oh, and she was also attacked by Republicans over cookies. Cookies!

‘Is That a Real Question?’

After playing just 35 games in the last two years, injuries may have forced NBA fans and analysts to forget how good Kevin Durant is. But Durant clearly didn’t forget.

Led by Durant, the Brooklyn Nets played arguably their most dominant game of the NBA season Monday night, blowing out the Milwaukee Bucks 125-88. After the win, the two-time NBA champion and two-time MVP was asked to reflect on overcoming his devastating Achilles injury.

“Tomorrow will mark two years since you initially injured your calf,” NBA on TNT reporter Jared Greenberg said. “I know you worked your butt off to get to this point, but did you ever think you’d be this good?”

If you're thinking that's a lame question, then you're on the same bemused page as Durant.
