TSA Approved Thread Cutter for In-flight Crafting

By R Barbara

TSA Approved Thread Cutter for In-flight CraftingI was scheduled to make a short flight last month. I wanted to bring my current quilt block project along in case I had time to work on one. One of the options found on the internet was using the cutter in a dental floss box. It works great and fits neatly into the Altoids tin I had for the paper pieced hexagons, thread, thimble, etc.

Teacup Candles

By Jackie H.

Teacup Candles - closeup of a teacup candleI bought all the supplies on Amazon.com, the wax, the wicks, a color kit, and a scented oil kit. Then I began making candles out of old empty jars, and then found old antique teacups and saucers. These make wonderful keepsake treasures and special gifts. And it is very easy, but requires "caution" when working with hot, melted wax.

DIY Turntable Cake

By attosa

DIY Turntable Cake - finished cakeI'm not a professional baker or cake decorator, but I do love making personalized desserts for my friends and family. I made this cake for my band bassist who adores collecting vinyl records (and playing them on his turntable all day). I've made it so the tunearm can be moved on and off the record, while staying 100% edible.

Oil and Food Colouring Marble Art

By attosa

Oil and Food Colouring Marble Art - examples of the finished pagesThis is a fun way to marblize paper with food colouring and oil, using no harmful chemicals. Since oil and water don't mix, the food colouring only stains the paper where the oil doesn't settle, creating beautiful and exciting scenes. This is a fantastic and low-cost craft to do with kids.

Embellish An Old T-Shirt

By hopeful

I take old T-shirts and cut off the binding around the neck. There is no need to cut deeper as this will stretch far enough making a scoop neckline. Then comes the fun part. Use a decorative stitch on your sewing machine to sew around the neckline.

This Week's Questions
Removing the Thread Take-up Lever on a Singer 99 Sewing Machine
I broke the thread uptake lever on my Singer 99 and need to remove it. Has anyone done this? We can't seem to remove it. We figured out the "lefthand" screws, but we can't get the whole mechanism out.
Best Glue for Updating a Cylinder Glass Block Bar
I'm trying to update my ugly old cylinder glass block bar and cover it up with something! Any ideas?
Adjusting the Tension When Using Heavy Upholstery Thread
I have a Brother XL 2230 sewing machine. I always run into a problem with the stitch tension adjustment. When sewing a cotton suede upholstery fabric I was OK when I tested the stitch with a polyester thread. When I decided to use the extra strong upholstery thread my stitches became loose on the wrong side of fabric. I tried decreasing and increasing the top dial, but it doesn't get better.
