 February 13, 2021  The Senate is racing towards the end of former President Donald Trump's impeachment trial. But one of the biggest questions hanging over the proceeding is whether Trump knew how much danger former Vice President Mike Pence was in when he tweeted out one last threat during the Capitol riot. Trump's defense lawyers have said he didn't, but that's impossible, Marc Ambinder writes. Trump either knew and didn't care or ignored what his staff was telling him, because Pence had some of the country's closest-held nuclear secrets with him on Jan. 6.
Given the chaos of the moment it is not inconceivable that Pence might have been separated from the military aide carrying during the "nuclear football" during the evacuation, Ambinder writes. "It is horrifying to speculate about this scenario because it is reasonable to envision exactly that might have happened."
