| | The Deseret News Editorial Board: "The gunshots that rang through a political rally and injured former President Donald Trump on Saturday were, in truth, aimed at all Americans. "No matter how passionate people may feel about politics and candidates, violence directed at one participant in the nation’s democratic process is an assault on all Americans, regardless of ideology. The integrity of that process ensures that laws and the will of the people reign supreme in a nation that has long been the envy of the world. "Violence is the henchman of coercion. It is the opposite of freedom. As Trump himself said in a message hours after the shooting, 'It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.'" Read more about how what follows the shooting must be a time of mourning and sober self-reflection. | Utah leaders responded swiftly with reactions to the news of the shooting. Ambassador Robert O’Brien, former U.S. National Security Advisor during Trump’s administration, released a statement along with Sen. Mike Lee: "We call on President Biden to immediately order that all federal criminal charges against President Trump be dropped, and to ask the governors of New York and Georgia to do the same. "Such a gesture would help heal wounds and allow all Americans to take a deep breath and reflect on how we got here. Our prayers are with the victims of the shooting, President Trump and our country." Here are other reactions from Utah leaders: Sen. Mike Lee: "Someone just tried to kill President Trump. Pray for him. And for swift justice." Sen. Mitt Romney: "Relieved the former President is safe and doing well. Outrageous and tragic that anyone would make such a heinous and evil act. Grateful for the quick response from Secret Service agents. This is a deeply sad day for America." Gov. Spencer Cox: "The attack on President Trump is sickening and horrifying. Abby and I join all Americans in praying for him and hope justice is swift for anyone involved." Read more about how Utah leaders reacted to the shooting at a Trump rally.
