During a week-long vacation in Cancun, I first noticed silent disco headphones and witnessed a Sound Off headphone sound system for the first time. As we strolled by the lobby towards the pool, it appeared as though a group of thirty people had either lost their minds or added something a little funny to their tequila that morning. Oblivious to what was going on around them and having too much fun to care, the group was connected by their silent disco headphones, sharing the same experience, exclusive to them and unknown to us onlookers. We noticed from the start that some people could not resist the urge to sing along, regardless of their ability to sing. I suppose we all sound like better singers to ourselves when we plug our ears and sing simultaneously. Still, I think a select few in that group believed we heard their voice as beautifully as they could hear themselves. To us, they sang along to nothing, which was fun to watch and something I had never seen before. Thanks to a handful of uninhibited disco dwellers, we identified the song that fueled the groups' possessed-like appearance; Cyndi Lauper, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"! Hypnotized by the beat, the lyrically challenged group danced, the singers made sounds, and the ensemble would take turns belting out an occasional "woo hoo!" out of sheer excitement. Read more... |
