Travellers' delight at plan for £ 337k worth of improvements to site

The head of a group of travellers who have lived on a permanent plot in Preston for 35 years says that if a bid for government funding is successful, it would enable “long overdue” repairs and improvements to be made to their home.

Preston City Council has made a pitch for £337,000 to renovate a facility on Leighton Street – just a quarter of a mile from the city centre.

The land – which lies in the shadow of the University of Central Lancashire’s Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre – has been home to the Gavin family since the late 1980s.

Elsewhere, a booming meat processing company looks set to expand its factory on the outskirts of Preston despite objections from people living nearby.

The expansion would increase the workforce by 20 per cent but locals have written 11 letters to Preston Council opposing the plans.

Also in today’s newsletter, the demolition of the iconic Piper nightclub in Preston looks imminent after Town Hall officers gave the nod to a high-rise apartment block in its place.

Planners have recommended that an 11-storey building should be approved on the site in Tithebarn Street - the latest tower block to be added to the sprouting city skyline.
