Traditional Chinese medicine has evolved over thousands of years. Practitioners use herbal products and various psychological and physical approaches, such as acupuncture and tai chi, to address health problems. Studies on acupuncture and tai chi have shown that both approaches may be helpful for some pain conditions. Tai chi appears to be a safe practice. Acupuncture also has a good record of safety when performed correctly. Studies of herbal products used in traditional Chinese medicine have had mixed results. Because many studies have been of poor quality, no firm conclusions can be reached about the products effectiveness. Some Chinese herbal products have been found to contain metals, undeclared drug ingredients, or incorrect herbs; these contaminants could cause serious harmful effects. |
