Injuries are part of why this has been such a frustrating Fantasy season so far, but only part. What's really made for a frustrating season is the fact that those injuries haven't really created a lot of opportunity for value to come about on the waiver wire. |
Fantasy football is, in many ways, a zero-sum game; when one player gets hurt, another player tends to benefit. But, when we had serious injuries to D'Andre Swift and David Montgomery last week, their immediate backups were already widely rostered in Fantasy, so there wasn't really much opportunity to take advantage. |

➕Top Week 5 Waiver Wire Targets |
|
This hasn't been a great season for the waiver wire, but there's reason to think this week's run could provide some actual impact players. Here are Jamey Eisenberg's top waiver-wire targets for Week 5: |
|
Jamey Eisenberg's top targets |
- Tyler Allgeier, RB, Falcons (46%) -- With Patterson on IR, Allgeier seems set for a stint as the lead back for a team that has run the ball frequently and quite well this season. Caleb Huntley will also have a role, but if Allgeier is available in your league, he should be a priority. My expectations aren't terribly high for Week 5 -- he's RB32 -- but if the Falcons keep running the ball like they have been, Allgeier is probably going to remain a solid option until Patterson is back to full health.
- George Pickens, WR, Steelers (63%) -- If you don't need a running back, however, Pickens should be the top priority if he's out there. He might end up being the steal of this year's draft, as he fell due to concerns about injury. He's a high-end athlete who showed quick chemistry with new Steelers starter Kenny Pickett, and while I do think Diontae Johnson will remain the No. 1 option moving forward, it would be a shame if Pickens wasn't the second option.
- Mike Boone/Latavius Murray, RB, Broncos (0%) -- The fact that we're listing both is a good indication that you shouldn't necessarily break the bank. Melvin Gordon still figures to be the lead back in Williams' absence if he can avoid fumbles -- easier said than done lately -- and either Boone or Murray could end up being the No. 2 option. There will be value for whoever that is, but until we know who it is, don't spend too much. For what it's worth, I would bet on Murray having a bigger role than Boone eventually, if not immediately after signing.
- Rachaad White, RB, Buccaneers (43%) -- White was one of the best pass catchers at the running back position in college, and he started to cut into Leonard Fournette 's playing time in Week 4. Nobody has really been able to do that in Tampa since the second half of last season, but White had five catches for 50 yards while playing 38% of the snaps Sunday, and could matter for Fantasy, especially in PPR, if he has a similar role moving forward.
- Josh Reynolds, WR, Lions (19%) -- Reynolds value seems contingent on Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark's chances of playing in Week 5 due to ankle injuries, but with 177 yards on 13 catches over the past two weeks, he looks like a solid option if St. Brown and/or Chark are out against the Patriots.
