TODAY'S TECH HACK Itβs almost April Fools' β¦ Monday is April 1, and I canβt let it go by without recommending some techy April Fools' Day pranks! If you know me well, you know I love a good gag. And if you know my husband, Barry, you know heβs my most frequent victim. These sneaky tricks are harmless (and hilarious), but be forewarned β they require a little bit of device snooping. Hey, what else do you have going on this weekend? Keyboard switcharoo When your kids or partner arenβt watching, reprogram their computer keyboard so the wrong characters come up some (or all) of the time. You just need the right bit of software and a few minutes. Use Microsoft PowerToys for Windows or Karabiner-Elements for Mac. Sit back and watch your victim lose it as they press the βeβ key but keep seeing an βrβ on the screen. Pro mode: Program half the letters with an βhβ and half with an βe.β When your mark starts typing, theyβll see βhehehe.β π€ βAlexa, go turtle modeβ Have an Amazon Echo at home? Just say "Alexa, speak more slowly" while no oneβs around, then give it the same command again. Enjoy watching the rest of your household wonder whatβs wrong with Alexa. Say "Alexa, speak at your default rate" when youβre done pranking. Hereβs my fave Alexa prank that requires a little work. You can train Alexa to answer a specific question however you want. When Barry asks Alexa for the weather in our home in Santa Barbara, it now replies, βLook out the window. You live in a glass house.β Pick a contact, any contact OK, limit this one to people you know very well who can take a joke. If you can get into their phone, swap a couple of contacts you know they'll be communicating with on April 1. Say your mark regularly texts two of their friends, Chuck and Pete. Go in and change Chuckβs contact name to βPeteβ and vice-versa. Now sit back and watch as their calls and messages go to the wrong person. Just don't do anything thatβll get βem fired or divorced. Set the desktop as the wallpaper My computer desktop is full of folders and shortcuts. It sure would be a shame if someone were to swap it with a static screenshot of said desktop ... On Windows: With the desktop visible, press Windows key + PrtSc to save a screenshot of your desktop to your Pictures folder. Then, go to Settings > Personalization > Background to set it as the desktop wallpaper. Now, hide the existing folders, shortcuts and other icons from the desktop. Right-click anywhere on the desktop background, then choose View and disable Show desktop icons. On a Mac: You can always stick to the old standby of changing the desktop background to something wacky, like the infamous painting of George Costanza from βSeinfeld.β Or make your mark think their screen is broken with one of these. More Cage For one glorious day, turn someoneβs internet into a Nicholas Cage-acopia. The nCage+ extension for Chrome can replace some (or all) of the pictures displayed on your browser with images of the famous actor. Who knows? Maybe your target will prefer their internet this way. π€£ Do you know why everyone is so tired on April 1? It's because it's at the end of a 31-day March. |
Try my favorite prayer app for free for 3 months I make it no secret that Iβm a Christian. I am proud of my beliefs and how it is truly the foundation of my business and personal life. Iβve been using the incredible prayer app Hallow for years and so when they wanted my endorsement, I was thrilled. Hallow is the No. 1 prayer app in the world, with over 10,000 pieces of content. Thereβs something for everyone. Try daily readings with Jonathan Roumie from βThe Chosen,β prayers with Mark Wahlberg, Bible stories, Christian music and lots more. Some of my favorites are Fr. Mike Schmitz with his Bible in a Year series and his Sunday homilies. I never read the entire Bible in my life until I got Hallow. I listen to Daily Reflections on my way to work and nightly prayers before I sleep. Thatβs the thing: You can pick and choose how you use Hallow so it suits you. This app is amazing, truly. Right now, millions of folks (including ME!) are doing Hallowβs Easter prayer challenge. Itβs a powerful way to reflect on the amazing gift of our salvation. Iβve arranged for Hallow to give you a free three-month trial. How great is that? Try it free now for three months, and celebrate this joyous season with more prayer on Hallow. β |
WEB WATERCOOLER π§ Friend or fake? A grandma got duped by her Facebook βfriendβ who told her she could win $200,000. The price of entry? $10,000. She sent the money, then called her friend β who had no idea what she was talking about. A scammer used AI to hack her friendβs account. The lesson: Call first. Pane in the glass: Oregon joins New York, California and Minnesota with a landmark repair law. It forces tech and other manufacturers to make parts, repair tools and how-tos available to us average Joes and local shops. Bonus: No more sneaky software locks to block aftermarket parts. βοΈ Cold case: Google Map fans found a massive βdoorβ in Antarctica. A pic making the rounds on Reddit shows a glassy rectangle peeking through the frost. Conspiracy theories abound, but it may actually be a few hundred meters from Japanβs Showa Station, a legitimate research base. Now you know. Wait, back up β¦ Luxury EV maker Polestar is rolling out a new SUV coupe, the Polestar 4. The showstopper: No rear window. But it does have a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera parking, adaptive cruise control β and a $56,300 price tag. Iβm gonna let everyone else test this out first. Take this, cancer: Imagine an army of tiny robots taking on cancer. Itβs happening! Researchers in Canada are using the magnetic field of an MRI machine to move them through a human body, and theyβre able to hit 95% of cancer cells. Clinical trials are still a long way off, but this is incredible stuff. ποΈ Hey, you: My national radio show is airing all weekend across the USA. TECH LIFE UPGRADES Earbud upgrade: You can do it without spending a ton. Raycons* cost less than half what the premium brands do and sound just as good. Get 15% off and free shipping when you use code KIM. I love mine! Tip-tap tab: Move through your open tabs with just your keyboard. Press Ctrl + Tab on Windows or Cmd + Tab on a Mac to cycle. To quickly close your active tab, hit Ctrl + W on Windows or, on your Mac, Cmd + W. For all my readers: The Kindle Scribe, Amazonβs bigger and fancier eβreader, is $100 off right now. Itβll house all your books and notes, plus it comes with a stylus. FYI, Kindles go weeks on a single charge. Adobe Premium runs $20.99 a month: If youβre getting into the photo-editing game, start for free. Shotcut is a 20-year-old open-source platform that gets updates all the time. Thereβs a big library of tutorials, too. Sweet. Type is money: Arial ends up costing you more than some default fonts when you print a lot. Times New Roman is a better default, but one of your best bets is Century Gothic, an option on Microsoft Office and Google Docs. Pro tip: If you donβt see Century Gothic in Google Docs, select the font dropdown, choose More Fonts and search for it there. Free flights! OK, not that kind, but I found a free flight simulator if youβre not ready to drop money on Microsoft Flight Simulator or Prepar3d. FlightGear is open-source, so itβs a bit less polished than the expensive versions, but itβs free! Word on the street is it works much better on Windows than Mac. |
DEALS OF THE DAY Fun Amazon finds A few little retail pick-me-ups I found for us: Itβs a pen! Itβs a level! Itβs a screwdriver! Itβs a bottle opener! Itβs, like, 10 more things. Just a good, old-fashioned foot massager. Imagine this under your desk. Monday just got better. Check out this DIY slushie cup. You know the cure for brain freeze right? Push your tongue to the roof of your mouth! A telescoping magnet for dropped screws β wonder if itβd work with AirPods, too. Serrated butter knife for better butter spreading. Iβll toast to that. |
WHAT THE TECH? I made this image using ChatGPT. For my next piece? Iβm drawing a blank. |
UNTIL NEXT TIME ... And thatβs all for today! Iβm off to catch some rays. You know, this morning, I woke up early and didnβt see the sun. Then it dawned on me. π Before you go, check out the Christian prayer app Hallow. Itβs my favorite way to stick to daily prayer and Bible time. Use my link to try it for free for three months. I love it and bet you will, too. In tomorrowβs issue, Iβll have your Sunday to-do list and a deep dive on a story that blew me away: How government intelligence agencies used online ads to find their targets. Wild, right? See you then with the best tech newsletter in the USA! β Kim |
