Brooke Ellsworth
I get into
my tunnel
soaked in the general
blessing
of aging
The myth of energy
is that
it's benevolent
That I'm obvious
is perhaps the only
gift
You have to
take care of yourself
a person on the train says
as they offer me their seat
here in the present
But what if the work
takes more
than it's worth
What if
for a moment
we stirred
that future

Poetry Daily Thanks You

To all our donors who contributed so generously on Giving Tuesday, we send our most heartfelt thanks. Without your support, we could not continue to share the best new work from poets, presses and journals. You make each day better, one poem at a time.

"What Does a Poet Laureate Get Paid For?"

Lee Herrick, California's tenth poet laureate, explains, "Each poet laureate, typically, is asked to advocate for poetry, educate and bring poetry to as many communities as he or she or they can....That can take the shape of readings or talks....in everything from a grade school to a university to a prison to a book club—and everything in between."

What Sparks Poetry:
Nicole Tong on Reaching Incarcerated Scholars

"Poetry by living poets reminds us that we live in a world shared by others in real time, and that especially matters during liminal periods marked by uncertainty and isolation. I’m inspired by people—JDC scholars, my community college students, women and children living in shelters— who navigate these waters—however they can—and (to borrow from the great Lucille Clifton) manage to 'sail through this to that'."
