TORRAS Ostand cases: When you want your phone to survive a fall out of a plane | Could your phone survive a 1700-foot drop out of an airplane into the English countryside? No, probably not -- at least, that’s what most of us would guess. But that’s just what happened to a TORRAS customer using the brand’s tough, nigh-indestructible cases. It’s hard to imagine your phone falling out of a plane for the average person, but it’s a testament to how strong the brand’s protection is. It means a phone falling out of your hands while you’re juggling groceries or belongings will be just fine, as long as it’s wrapped in a TORRAS case ...

Huawei's Fit Watch 3 looks just like the most famous smartwatch in the world
| Lots of reviews have been dropping for Huawei’s Watch Fit 3 — here's a look at some of them | The most recent Fit Watch 3 review, from GSM Arena, noted how Huawei has ditched the rectangular design of its predecessors for a look that's “strongly reminiscent of the Apple Watch.” Digital Trends put it more bluntly, saying: “If I wanted to wear an Apple Watch, I’d wear an Apple Watch and not a rip-off,” though the reviewer admitted that the device itself is actually "pretty good." Forbes noted the Apple Watch likeness, too, while also praising the “extremely good” battery life that managed 11 days on a single charge, and its 1.8-inch AMOLED screen with 1,500 nits of maximum brightness. Android Headlines liked its comfortable fit, while PhoneArena said it “punches way above its weight” ... | |

Everything you wanted to know about Filmmaker Mode on your TV | New TVs have a plethora of picture modes, and Filmmaker Mode may be one of the more confounding options | Filmmaker Mode may not be a hit with everyone who tries it, but it appears to be misunderstood. Filmmaker Mode is designed to bring a more cinematic look via no motion smoothing (aka, no soap opera effect), no over-brightening or messing with the image’s contrast, no over-sharpening, and no deviation from accurate colors and grayscale. Here’s the problem, though: Filmmaker Mode also specifies the luminance — that is, the brightness — of the image. And that’s true both in terms of average picture level (or average brightness) and peak brightness. And that’s where Filmmaker Mode falls apart ...

The Garfield Movie overtakes last weekend's champ to win box office | The Garfield Movie has now grossed $152 million globally; Variety calls it “a solid showing for the $60 million-budgeted film”
| The Garfield Movie took the top spot at the North American box office over the weekend, coming in ahead of last week’s winner, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Variety reported. Garfield raked in $14 million from 4,108 theaters in its second weekend of release, while Furiosa trailed in third place with $10.7 million from 3,864 venues. IF edged into second place with $10.8 million from 3,783 venues. But Variety said that overall, it was “another terrible weekend at the box office, with ticket sales a staggering 65% behind the same three-day period in 2023.” It added that with figures for the first half of 2024 also down, “Hollywood and movie theaters desperately need some hits on the horizon to help shrink the gap” ... | |

Asus finally offers a proper look at the ROG Ally X
| The follow-up to its popular ROG Ally gaming handheld is a decent upgrade
| Following last month’s tease, Asus chose the Computex event in Taiwan to officially unveil the ROG Ally X, IGN said in a report that went hands-on with the gaming gadget. The 7-inch, 120Hz handheld now has much-improved battery life without adding much to its weight of just under 1.5 pounds. The ROG Ally X also comes with more RAM (up to 24GB) and storage (up to 8TB), while a USB 4 port has replaced the ROG XG mobile port, allowing for the use of an external GPU.
