He will confront his own work with works from his collection in order to perhaps divert the gaze from living beings and things and focus on the pictures themselves. After the great success of his major retrospective Timm Rautert and the Lives of Photography, at the Folkwang Museum, Essen his very personal cosmos is now unfolding in three different rooms. Timm Rautert (* 1941 Tuchel, West Prussia) is considered one of the most outstanding contemporary German photographer. Over the decades, he has not only been able to anticipate the most important trends in photography, but also to have a decisive influence on them - as a studio photographer for galleries, as a photo journalist, as a chronicler of the changing world of work and finally as a university professor who influenced subsequent generations. As a student under Otto Steinert at what was then the Folkwang School in Essen-Werden, Rautert quickly developed a solid foundation for committed, social documentary photography. At the same time, he researches the fundamentals of photography and develops "image analytical photography", which methodically permeates his artistic work to this day. The change between applied and artistic moments is not a contradiction in Rautert's understanding, but rather an expression of a dedicated, photographic authorship. In 1969 Rautert travels to the USA and takes photos, among other he portraits Franz Erhard Walther, Andy Warhol and Walter de Maria. In Osaka, 1970, he documents the World Exhibition and the traditional Japanese society. From the mid 1970s, Rautert worked together with the journalist Michael Holzach on joint reports for ZEITmagazin. Around 70 photographs from the work group Housing the Invisible with photographs of research and production facilities such as the Max Planck Institute (1988) or Siemens AG (1989) (...). A recurring focus of Rautert is the artist portrait; he made his first by the Czech photographer Josef Sudek on the occasion of an exhibition by Otto Steinert and his students. This is followed by portraits of Otl Aicher, Pina Bausch, André Heller, Jasper Morrison and Eric Rohmer and many others. Rautert not only focuses on the person, but also on their surroundings and actions; the sphere of activity of the person portrayed is recorded as part of his or her identity. With the appointment as professor of photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig (1993–2008) Rautert turned intensively to his free work. His focus is on the new survey, restructuring and resumption of former projects. His students include Viktoria Binschtok, Falk Haberkorn, Harry (Grit) Hachmeister, Margret Hoppe, Sven Johne, Ricarda Roggan, Adrian Sauer, Sebastian Stumpf and Tobias Zielony. In 2008 Timm Rautert was the first photographer to receive the Lovis Corinth Prize for his artistic life's work.
