1st working breakfast meeting with new MEPs

The 1st K4I Forum Governing Board breakfast meeting will be attended by returning and new Members of the Parliament and representatives of the K4I association from public, private and academic stakeholders.
Looking back from 10 years K4I, the meeting will have a first discussion on K4I 2030 priorities and activities and prepare for the upcoming innovation summit events on AI & Big Data for Innovation and the 11th European Innovation 'Policy' Summit.

Photonics industry to invest €100 billionin R&I
in new Horizon Europe partnership

A new position paper published the 17th of June, showsthe photonics industry’s commitment to invest up to €100 billion in R&I throughout the next scientific research initiative, Horizon Europe, 2021-2027, in an ambitious new Public Private Partnership with the European Commission.
The paper argues the move is essential for the digital transformation based on deep technologies, and for Europe to remain competitive in the face of ambitious funding for photonics from China, South Korea and America.
With four recent Nobel Prizes awarded to European scientists for their work in photonics, Europe is in a good position to accelerate advanced initiatives - such as AI, High-Performance Computing, Quantum Communication, Quantum Computing, and Smart Cities - which all depend on photonics as the key enabling technology.

The SPIRE 2050 Vision: “Towards the next generation of European Process Industries” foresees an integrated and digital European Process Industry, delivering new technologies and business models that address climate change and enable a fully circular society in Europe with enhanced competitiveness and impact for jobs and growth. This vision has been defined in a collaborative process among eight SPIRE sectors and paved the way to the kick-off of the SPIRE 2050 Roadmap on 26 March this year. Since then the SPIRE Working Groups have been busy drafting the roadmap document and the SPIRE community will be invited to provide and share their feedback on the SPIRE 2050 Roadmap on the occasion of the Stakeholders’ Event on Wednesday 11 September. First Austrian IFIP Forum “AI and future society”

The first Austrian IFIP AI Forum, organized by TC12 in collaboration with BMVIT (Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, Austria) took place in the building of BMVIT, Vienna May 8-9, 2019. It was devoted to various aspects of Artificial Intelligence and its positive and negative impacts on Society. After the welcome by President Mike Hinchey and Michael Wiesmüller (BMVIT) two invited talks Stephen Ibaraki (IP3) and Prof Sir Roger Penrose presented complementary lighting on AI : first more business oriented and second based on modern physics on the capacities of human and machines.
According to initial objectives the 13 speakers from IEEE, EU- K4I, academia and companies covered a large spectrum of AI with perfect mix of theoretical reflections, trends and operational applications for health care, transportation, retail efficiency, computer games and robotics. Each talk included a discussion on the impact of AI on society in terms of reasoning, assistance, entertainment, influencing behaviors and synergy human-machine. Some perspectives on AI governance and ethics were also addressed and finally we opened a discussion on principles to follow for collaborating safely to build a world empowered by AI. This topic is open for continuous contribution.
It was decided that the next Austrian AI Forum will take place in 2020.
