A new landmark in Dallas was born thanks to the failure of a building’s collapse during demolition. Dubbed “The Leaning Tower of Dallas” on social media, the structure had been scheduled for removal so construction could begin on several new buildings. After the core of the building failed to implode, it dropped and rested with a prominent lean, which attracted the attention of several onlookers. Now, several days later, the ruined building is a viral hit with professional and amateur photographers alike. And just like with the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, the majority of photos feature people pretending to prop the building up. There’s even a petition to protect the leaning building in its current form, with the description saying supporters should do it “for the memes.” If we look at several choices we’ve made as a society in the past decade, we’d say this is as valid a reason as any.
