Until next time, ArtPrize |
After 16 days of interactive art displays, workshops, competitions to see which artists should share $400,000 in prizes and more, ArtPrize 2024 has officially come to a close. Hundreds of people celebrated competition winners during the block party style closing ceremony in downtown Grand Rapids on Friday, Sept. 27. The event also featured North America's largest marionette, a 35-foot, 200 pound illuminated puppet constructed of wire. For a special twist to the puppet show, a circus performer dangled from its metal fingers in front of the crowd. “Dynamic Sunset,” a bright and colorful oil and acrylic painting of a Lake Michigan sunset by artist John Katerberg, took home the $125,000 grand prize as the winner of this year's competition. |

Tigers will head to Houston after losing regular-season finale |
Playoffs bound: The Detroit Tigers are headed to Houston. The Tigers (86-76) dropped their regular-season finale to the Chicago White Sox, 9-5, on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park, while the Kansas City Royals (86-76) won their last game at Atlanta. The team will now play against the Houston Astros for the best-of-three Wild Card Series, which begins on Tuesday. If you missed the big news: The Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 4-1 on Friday night, clinching their first playoff berth since 2014 in front of a sold-out crowd at Comerica Park. Dungeon of Doom: The Detroit Lions will be without a handful of key pieces on their quest to beat the Seattle Seahawks for the first time since 2012. While that’s not easy, it’s vital to remember that’s life in the NFL, with Seattle also sporting an aggressively-long injury report this week. MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast is back with a mailbag episode to break it down before the big matchup on Monday Night Football. |

Michigan electric, gas utilities get approval for multimillion-dollar rate hikes |
A pair of Michigan energy utilities have the official green light to raise customers’ rates beginning in 2025. Electric customers served by Upper Peninsula Power Co., or UPPCO, will see a $9 million total rate hike, while natural gas customers of Michigan Gas Utilities Corp. in southern Michigan should expect a total increase of $7 million under separate settlement agreements approved by Michigan regulators on Thursday, Sept. 26. Michigan wants to invest in more propane storage capacity and is making millions of dollars in grant money available for such business growth. The Michigan Public Service Commission and the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy recently announced a second round of grant applications for propane-focused energy resilience efforts. About $2.85 million remains available after the first round of grant awards didn’t have enough eligible projects apply. Opinions: Michigan environmental regulators will host an online public hearing on Tuesday, Oct.1, about future Great Lakes water use by the closed Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, should it be restarted as planned. |

Michigan has real-life tornado wranglers, on a mission to warn about severe weather |
Five men in Michigan are the real-life versions of characters depicted in the popular “Twisters” film, living on the front lines of severe weather. Their group, called Michigan Storm Chasers, launched in 2022. Since then, they’ve had a meteoric rise in popularity. Across Facebook, YouTube and X, the group boasts almost 150,000 followers. How they work: Severe weather forecasts for the entire country are issued from the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma. MSC takes that information and explains it to its followers, mapping what locations are most likely to get severe weather and how bad it could get. Jack frost: It’s the time of year when we can start expecting frost here in Michigan. The interior sections of southern Lower Michigan can likely expect the first frost in mid-October. At the warm places of southern Michigan it will probably be the last week of October. Northern Lower Michigan also shouldn’t have frost inland until mid-October. |

University of Michigan study shows benefits of police body camera reviews |
Documenting: A new University of Michigan study shows body cameras on law enforcement can help with collecting evidence, checking police abuse claims, and also training officers on effective communication with community members. Compared to recordings of stops that occurred before the officer’s training, the researchers found officers used more techniques in future traffic stops four weeks later after the training. They were also more likely to express concern for drivers’ safety, offer reassurance and provide explicit reasons for the stop. In Wayne County: An investigation is underway after a teen girl allegedly stabbed her younger sister to death. Taylor police officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance Saturday, Sept. 28. There, police found a 7-year-old girl had suffered injuries consistent with being stabbed. An investigation revealed the girl’s injuries were allegedly inflicted by her 13-year-old sister during the altercation. Police took the teen girl into custody. In cuffs: A person arrested outside former President Donald Trump’s rally Friday in Walker faces charges related to possessing explosives and false threats of terrorism. |

45-mile Dragon trail fully open after 6 years of construction |
Now open: This highly anticipated loop trail around a dragon-shaped pond is now ready to be enjoyed in its entirety. All 45 miles of The Dragon Trail are now open, officials announced on Facebook. This natural-surface trail features several bridges, boardwalks and overlooks, plus the opportunity to cross Hardy Dam, the world’s third largest earthen dam. Speaking of trails: Portage’s Bicentennial Park Trail will close daily for one to two weeks beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1. About 0.3 miles of the paved biking and walking trail will close from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. between Romence Road and Celery Flats each day for May's EF2 tornado damage cleanup, according to a city press release. Fall activity: As autumn sets in, many families head to nearby corn mazes, seeking a mix of outdoor activity and seasonal enjoyment. If winding through a maze is on your seasonal to-do list, here are five options to check out in Mid-Michigan. |
