More than 16,000 file unemployment claims in week

In the past 16 weeks, 651,750 initial unemployment claims have been filed in South Carolina. The federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program, which provides an additional $600 per week, is set to expire July 25.

TechSC rebrands as SC Tech, names new director

The S.C. Council on Competitiveness has rebranded its TechSC technology and cybersecurity growth initiative to SC Tech. It also announced Kim Christ as its new director. Christ was previously a program director for SC Codes.

Senate passes bill to aid nonprofits with unemployment

A bill co-sponsored by Sen. Tim Scott that allows nonprofits to pay states only 50% of unemployment costs upfront was passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate late last week.

Virtual blockchain conference set for next week

PalmettoChain Inc. and S.C. Blockchain will present ResilienceSC2020 Virtual Blockchain Conference on Wednesday. The event will includes speakers from around the country, including blockchain strategist Dale Chrystie of FedEx and S.C. Sen. Tom Davis. The conference will focus on blockchain applications for business. There is no charge to attend, but advance registration is encouraged so that attendees can receive notifications about sessions and links for watching.
