SNOW!!! How many of us woke up this morning and were pleasantly surprised at the fresh layer of snow on the ground with light snow still falling? It seems like quite awhile since we had a measurable amount of snow here in Hampton Roads. With all the craziness of the past year - you had to admit that it was nice to wake up to this morning, right?

Speaking of all the craziness of the past year - the COVID-19 challenge continues. The U.K. variant showed up in Virginia for the first time earlier this week - as we continue to wrestle with the challenge of accelerating vaccinations throughout the commonwealth - to include here in Hampton Roads.  As most of us wait our turn - you know the drill: keep six feet of distance, wear a mask and was your hands frequently! Even with these struggles, Chesapeake City Schools voted to start up fall high school varsity sports come February. Definitely a relief f for seniors that will have a last chance to compete on the field one last time at the high school level.  Doesn't it seem forever since high school football played on Friday evenings??

Speaking of football - The Super Bowl is set!  Tom Brady magically shows up in the Super Bowl AGAIN - this time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to take on the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes II. Should be quite a game.

With the Super Bowl in mind, our gift card contests should be of some use this week.

COMING SUNDAY:

Legislation to end capital punishment in Virginia would mark the final nail in the coffin on a punishment that’s been slowly dying out for years.

The last two death sentences were handed down in Virginia in 2011, with no defendant since hearing that he must die for his crimes.

Virginia’s death row now counts only two men -- both convicted killers from Hampton Roads -- down from the dozens awaiting that fate in the 1990s.

The Old Dominion hasn’t executed a prisoner since 2017 -- with only five people dying at state hands since 2011. By contrast, the stated executed 57 people between 1995 and 2000.

A bill sponsored by Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon, and William M. Stanley Jr., R-Franklin County, would mean the end of capital punishment in Virginia.

  •  Arthur T. Carter has formed the Union Soldier Monument Advisory and Implementation Committee on the Eastern Shore to build a Civil War monument to men, African American and white, who fought for the federals. He started the group last summer when Confederate monuments around the country were being removed in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. The proposed statue would be a compromise in that it would sit opposite the Confederate monument that is there now. The Northampton Board of Supervisors recently voted to remove it but there isn't a time frame on the removal. That isn't going to stop the group's plan. It would be the same height as the Confederate monument, black granite, and its soldier would have the features of an African American man.

With Amazon selling thousands of Trump 2020 F*** Your Feelings flags, guess it’s not surprising that some wound up in yards in HR. But it makes people wonder what the rules are. Is it really ok to display curse words like that in full view of a public street? Yep.

  • When it comes to pho, you want the soup that was born yesterday.

Vietnam’s national dish is one of the world’s great culinary inventions, a long-simmered beef noodle bowl prized for its clarity and aromatic balance, and the boomingly rich flavor of marrow drawn from the bones.

It is almost certainly Vietnam’s best known culinary export, an easy-to-love soup whose low cost and apparent simplicity belies laborious hours of preparation.
