Legislation to end capital punishment in Virginia would mark the final nail in the coffin on a punishment thatâs been slowly dying out for years.
The last two death sentences were handed down in Virginia in 2011, with no defendant since hearing that he must die for his crimes.
Virginiaâs death row now counts only two men -- both convicted killers from Hampton Roads -- down from the dozens awaiting that fate in the 1990s.
The Old Dominion hasnât executed a prisoner since 2017 -- with only five people dying at state hands since 2011. By contrast, the stated executed 57 people between 1995 and 2000.
A bill sponsored by Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon, and William M. Stanley Jr., R-Franklin County, would mean the end of capital punishment in Virginia.
