The restaurant industry has been more than hard-hit in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic, with local restaurants struggling to keep afloat, and moving to takefout and patio business to prop up the bottom line. But new restaurants continue to plan openings this year â whether casual restaurants geared toward strange times, or ambitious spots banking on a future beyond the pandemic as vaccines slowly make their way around the country. This includes a glut of new breweries, as well as multiple casual barbecue or taco spots. But it also includes a fine-dining restaurant from one of the regionâs most lauded chefs, an expansive Italian kitchen from some of Hampton Roadsâ most successful restaurateurs, and a hotel seafood spot with multiple patios and Chesapeake Bay views. Kevin and Doug Lawrence once produced some of the largest hair and beauty shows on the east coast in Hampton Roads. Initial attendance went from 500 to more than 5,000 at their last 2013 show. But then life happened and the brothers pulled back from the spotlight. They have spent the past two years rebranding their "Lawrence Brothers Promotions" and have added a non-profit to raise scholarship money for college students.
