Energy Realism last week hit on some of our most favorite topics, with the green dream (err, nightmare) right at the top of the list. Larry Behrens got us started last week by utterly obliterating the hypocrisy when it comes to the greens demanding that we all “fight climate change.” According to Bernie Sanders, as just one example, climate change is a moral and existential threat demanding sweeping government intervention and dramatic changes in personal behavior. Except, of course, when it comes to how he lives his own life. And then, JT Young delivers the green knockout punch: the recent Iberian blackout starkly warns against an ideologically-driven dependence on renewable energy. It offers an even greater caution for a climate change strategy that rests on such a dependency. While much is still unknown about the blackout’s origins, it is clear renewable energy is more expensive, more complex, and less reliable than is popularly promulgated. No kidding. Already having lost on physics and higher costs, greens have resorted to pushing climate lawfare to stop better equipped fossil fuels. Jason Scott Johnston, a distinguished professor at the University of Virginia Law School, gives his take on why that is such a terrible idea. Recently, the Trump Administration filed lawsuits seeking to halt efforts by some states to impose liability on fossil fuel companies for their past greenhouse gas emissions. It will likely take some years for these lawsuits to be resolved. What is already clear are the serious and senseless economic consequences that will follow if states are allowed to punish fossil fuel companies for their lawful past production.
