Last week’s curation at RealClear’s American Civics portal focused on commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day. At RealClearPolitics, Jack Miller Center President Hans Zeiger shares interviews he did with D-Day veterans from his hometown of Puyallup, Washington. Zeiger writes that they “described in vivid detail the events that changed the course of history." Staff Sgt. Ed Porter told Zeiger about the terrible holding period before his tank unit was cleared to go ashore. Porter said that though the “movies are gruesome,” they are “not as gruesome as it really was. Looking back, it was just like you were looking at a hell.” Zeiger recounts how veterans of the Greatest Generation gave it their all to stop the advancement of tyranny and make a stand for liberty. “As we commemorate the 80th anniversary of that heroic moment, we should have immense gratitude for those who sacrificed much to preserve the cause of liberty around the world,” Zeiger concludes. At Politico, Garrett Graff highlights the story of Cpl. Waverly B. Woodson Jr., a black soldier who showed great heroism on Omaha Beach in June 1944. Woodson spent over 30 hours treating the wounded and ultimately saved dozens of lives all while being injured. Though Woodson receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor was floated at the highest levels, that unfortunately never happened. (He received a Bronze Star without with the “V,” signifying that his actions took place in a combat zone.) Now, however, Woodson is getting the recognition he very much deserves. Graff notes that “the Pentagon and U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) announced that Woodson will receive the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest medal for combat valor.” Essential Reading Hans Zeiger, RealClearPolitics After watching "Band of Brothers" in 2007, I began interviewing World War II veterans from Puyallup, Washington...
