VETERANS JUNETEENTH WORKSHOP: LEGACY & MEMORY THROUGH ARTIFACTS OF SERVICE

Wednesday, June 25 | 11 AM-2 PM

FREE for active military, veterans, and first responders


Join us for a special Juneteenth program celebrating service and creativity with artist Jermaine Powell and CAM Cultural Curator Daniel Jones.


Learn the story of William J. Gould, a formerly enslaved man from Wilmington who escaped during the Civil War and served in the United States Navy, his journey preserved in a personal diary. View Jermaine Powell’s portrait of Gould, created for the 1897 Continuum of Change initiative.


Then, take part in The Legacy of Service workshop, where Powell will guide guests in designing a symbolic medal or insignia reflecting their own service or life mission.


Presented in partnership with CAM and the Veterans Creative Arts Program.

MARY’S ART EXPLORERS:

CHLOE ZOE SERIES

Thursday, June 26 | 10 AM

This session, and all summer sessions of Mary’s Art Explorers, are FREE for the first 50 registrants through the generous support of International Paper Foundation.

 

Join us in the Reception Hall as we read from the Chloe Zoe Book Series by author and illustrator Jane Smith, or Super Jane, our special guest, who will read her books aloud. Plus, there will be an activity coordinated with the book series and an opportunity to purchase a signed copy from the author!

 

Mary's Art Explorers is geared towards infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, but big brothers and sisters are welcome to join and create art with us. Your registration includes admission to the museum for the whole day. Pre-register to guarantee your spot!

The Game Changers: Diebenkorn, Frankenthaler, and Rauschenberg


March 20 - October 5, 2025

Helen Frankenthaler, Richard Diebenkorn, and Robert Rauschenberg created essential works in the mid-20th century, forever changing what American art would look like and what it could mean to us.


The Game Changers exhibition expands viewers’ appreciation of prints in the permanent collection with the generous inclusion of works by Frankenthaler, Diebenkorn, Rauschenberg, and their contemporaries from renowned American museum collections.

We Belong Here: The Gutierrez Collection

We Belong Here: The Gutierrez Collection is the first public exhibition of contemporary art collected over the past decade by North Carolina collectors Onay Gutierrez and Jeff Childers. In their words: “The Gutierrez Collection creates a space for dialogue and understanding across diverse identities and perspectives.”


Featuring over 130 works by international contemporary artists, it focuses on 21st-century pieces that engage with social, political, cultural, and personal issues.

Space Makers: Art and Disability in North Carolina highlights the powerful and diverse voices of artists with disabilities across North Carolina. Through visual, experiential, and experimental works, these artists explore the many ways disability shapes how we move through and engage with the world.


This exhibition invites viewers to reflect on access, ability, and expression, offering intimate glimpses into each artist's lived experiences and creating space for dialogue, understanding, and connection.

DOUBLE THE PLATE,

DOUBLE THE FUN!

Instructor: Donna Moore & Antoinette Vogt

Using Drypoint and Monotype creates unique artwork with two plates forming one image. First, create a repeatable drypoint image from your drawing/photo or one provided. Then, add color with a monotype, experimenting with mixing, layering, stencils, and textures. Print both plates on top to produce a one-of-a-kind piece. Work abstractly or realistically; no experience needed.

FLORALS AND FRUITS

The class will be painting watercolor flowers and fruits. On the first day, we will practice simple flowers and fruits from photos. On the 2nd day, we'll have small still lifes set up around the room to paint from. We will talk about composition, simplifying, and warm and cool colors.
