| Join us this Saturday, February 15th at 7 PM for this special collaborative performance by Grammy-nominated musician Tift Merritt and NC Artist Thomas Sayre.
Four Walls, Four Songs, a sound response to Thomas Sayre: Four Walls, returns to Cameron Art Museum as a beautiful way to say goodbye to this powerful exhibition.
The performance explores the burned, brushed, rusted, and razed layers of Sayre’s visual work. Merritt’s multi-movement piece uses voice, piano, and guitar while drawing us deeper into the elemental artworks on display in Sayre’s Four Walls. Drawing from a deep friendship and creative dialogue between the two artists, Tift Merritt crafts a sound exploration that resonates with the materials, visuals, and questions posed by Sayre’s monumental piece.

Thomas Sayre: Four Walls features new and never exhibited works by American artist Thomas Sayre (American, b. 1950). Each of the four large-scale pieces installed in Cameron Art Museum’s Hughes Wing engage the belief systems and symbols that underpin the ideals of church, nation, and creation. Made of materials that include tar, smoke, fabric gowns, gunshots, welding material, earth and fire, these works invite visitors to draw close and experience the messiness of making, and by analogy, to bear witness to the ways that life invades, entangles, and tarnishes us. | Elisabeth Chant
Elisabeth Chant (February 7, 2025 – April 27, 2025) North Carolina artist Elisabeth Chant (1865-1947) made an indelible mark on Wilmington’s art community. She became known for her vibrant landscapes and scenes of the North Carolina coast. Chant also created decorative designs and explored mysticism and spiritual themes, which informed her artistic style. She was instrumental in developing Wilmington’s cultural landscape, founding art classes, mentoring young artists, and establishing a community art association. This exhibition explores the people and landscapes of Chant’s world. |

| PATTERN: A PRINCIPLE OF DESIGN Instructor: Judith Chandler Join us in a creative class where we explore the captivating world of patterns, a fundamental design element found in various art forms such as quilting, fiber arts, tableware, and clothing! From classic designs like checkerboards and herringbones, we will use line, shape, color, texture, form, and space, as well as learn about famous artists who have used this in their work to create a 12" x 12" painting of your design as a finished work or one that can serve as a foundation for other creative media.
