THE WEEK IN REVIEW: Monument and USCT Descendants Welcomed |
|
Monumentopened Thursday night and we welcomed over 200 visitors to this powerful new exhibition. The opening included a wine tasting with Longevity Wines, a compelling conversation with Dr. Valerie Johnson and Boundless creator Stephen Hayes. DJ Louis joined us in our courtyard spinning an amazing set of music inspired by the exhibition.
Saturday was our USCT Descendant's Homecoming and we welcomed 650 visitors including over 60 USCT Descendants. USCT Reenactors were inside and outside providing Living History, USCT Descendant Dr. Andrena Evans performed, and Dr. Sherwin Bryant from Northwestern gave an incredible lecture. Legacy, a new short film chronicling the oral histories of USCT Descendants, by award-winning filmmaker Adam Alphin premiered.
Our mission as your cultural gathering place was confirmed over and over again these past few days and we are incredibly grateful. |

Monument takes inspiration from Boundless, the public sculpture on Cameron Art Museum’s grounds by Stephen Hayes honoring the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and their fight for freedom. Through their work, artists Radcliffe Bailey, Sonya Clark, Willie Cole, Stephen Hayes, Juan Logan, Alison Saar, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Kara Walker, and others create a dialogue acknowledging, questioning, and confronting the idea of commemoration in the built environment in the United States. |
| Place of Encounters/ Lugar de Encuentros |
North Carolina is home to a rich diversity of voices, and this is reflected in its community of Latin American artists.
Work from Lugar de Encuentros / Place of Encounters often straddles two worlds, reflecting both birthplace and resettlement, exploring both tension and harmony in the relationship between the two. Artists include Nico Amortegui, CornelioCampos, Rodrigo Dorfman, Mario Marzan, Renzo Ortega, and Rosalia Torres-Weiner. |
| North Carolina artist Stephen Hayes has fashioned this life-size bronze sculpture from the cast features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story – USCT descendants, re-enactors, veterans, and community leaders.
Boundless was unveiled November 13, 2021 and is on permanent view in the PNC USCT Park on the museum grounds.
Boundless is connected deeply to the community’s history, its present, and its future. |
