THE MUSIC OF CLOSE TO HOME |
|
Music is an integral part of our lives. It ushers forth memories, inspires us, and helps us feel at home. As part of Close to Home, the largest exhibition of our permanent collection ever mounted, we reached out to local tastemakers and friends of CAM to create a series of inspired playlists. Stay tuned as we work with CAM staff and others to add more.
Join us for brunch, lunch, or Thursday night dinner in CAM Café, and you'll hear them in rotation.
Follow Cameron Art Museum on Spotify to listen to this series and more selections inspired by our exhibitions. |
"When the Cameron Art Museum asked me to curate a playlist inspired by its Close to Home exhibition, my first thought was to shine a light on all the great music that has come out of Wilmington, my hometown, over the decades.
After all, I play this music in my very own home all the time, and you can see a lot of these acts performing in Wilmington any given weekend." |
Fort Lowell Records celebrates Close to Home with this selection of Wilmington NC artists from their incredible roster over the past four years. The playlist spans many genres: Indie Rock, Hip Hop, Electronic, and Folk. Check out Fort Lowell Records This Water is Life albums for sale in the Museum Shop.

"Being close to home has always been a complicated relationship between dissonance and delight. The songs in this playlist were selected because they speak to the tension of that relationship." - Tim Jarman, The Fuzzy Needle.
Play Fuzzy Needle: Close to Home. | From the sophisticated sounds of the Modern Jazz Quartet, whose bass player was Wilmington native Percy Heath, to the rock and hip-hop songs from contemporary Port City artists, there is a continuum of cool I wanted to acknowledge and share with you. Enjoy! - John Staton, Star News

Thomas Sayre: Four Walls
Thomas Sayre: Four Walls features new and never exhibited works by American artist Thomas Sayre (American, b. 1950). Each of the four large-scale pieces installed in Cameron Art Museum’s Hughes Wing engage the belief systems and symbols that underpin the ideals of church, nation, and creation. Made of materials that include tar, smoke, fabric gowns, gunshots, welding material, earth and fire, these works invite visitors to draw close and experience the messiness of making, and by analogy, to bear witness to the ways that life invades, entangles, and tarnishes us. | Last Week! Flying School (Ecole d’aviation)
Welcome the return of Diane Landry’s(Canadian, b. 1958) signature work Flying School (Ecole d’aviation), 2000. Its multi-colored umbrellas, attached to rods at different heights, fold and unfold intermittently, like a person inhaling and exhaling. Motor-driven accordions lie at each of the umbrella bases. Their silhouettes cast by the halogen lighting are projected upward on the ceiling, resembling flowers opening and closing. The magical umbrella accordions are a hybrid of light and sound, infused with elements of sculpture, musical craftsmanship, and electronics. Learn More |
