| Join us Thursday evening as the Doug Irving Legacy Ensemble pays respect through music to former Wilmington Pianist and Vocalist Rudy and Cynthia Tyson.
Rudy and Cynthia Tyson were the original local pioneers of jazz in Wilmington from the late 1970s through the 1990s. The couple were known as active musicians within the community and ran a summer after school program at the Boy’s Club in downtown Wilmington, where they promoted the art of jazz. This program was free and easily accessible to children in the area. The Tysons’ goals were to develop more minority musicians in the community and to develop the younger generation.
Doug Irving, a fellow musician, attended the program in the 7th grade, where he first became familiar with the Tysons. While attending UNCW, Irving kept a relationship with the jazz couple throughout the years, growing inspired by their music and goals, and eventually creating his own ensemble to pay respect to these jazz professionals. Consisting of former students of the Tysons', the Doug Irving Legacy Ensemble reflects the legacy of the pair by continuing to play jazz.
The Doug Irving Legacy Ensemble includes Doug Irving on bass, Benny Hill on saxophone, Carlos Garcia on piano, and Dwayne Jordan on drums. Selections will come from original tunes, arrangements, and the Children’s Ensemble "Jazz-A-Tazz."

Monument takes inspiration from Boundless, the public sculpture on Cameron Art Museum’s grounds by Stephen Hayes honoring the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and their fight for freedom. Through their work, artists Radcliffe Bailey, Sonya Clark, Willie Cole, Stephen Hayes, Juan Logan, Alison Saar, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Kara Walker, and others create a dialogue acknowledging, questioning, and confronting the idea of commemoration in the built environment in the United States. |

Work from Lugar de Encuentros / Place of Encounters often straddles two worlds, reflecting both birthplace and resettlement, exploring both tension and harmony in the relationship between the two.
