This is a Purim like no other.

Dear Reader,

Like so many Jewish holidays, Purim is a celebration of survival. We may enjoy dressing up in costumes and eating delicious hamantaschen, but the story of courage and resilience captured in the Book of Esther is really what the holiday is all about.

This year, it’s easy to see modern parallels: Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy is a modern Mordechai defending his people against a massive superpower. The Forward has been documenting his country’s heroic courage — and painful struggle — in real time, as well as reporting on how to hold Putin accountable, how to help Ukrainian refugees, and even how global Jewish communities have dedicated their pre-Purim fast to the fight.
