Vale Florian Schneider, RVG's incredible Feral, and how to watch High Fidelity
I never think about Florian Schneider.
You probably don't think about him much either.
I love Kraftwerk. They are one of those bands whose impact on music was so enormous that words don't do it justice.
The moment you discover them is a wondrous and confusing one: they might have influenced the entire electro genre, but no one has ever come close to sounding like Kraftwerk.
Given his relative quietness – he almost never gave interviews – one might suspect Schneider didn't want us thinking about him. His band was essentially based on a mechanical concept, personality wasn't a big part of it.
And he died quietly. It was a week before fans even knew about it.
So, while it's incredibly sad that a genius has left us, it's a great chance to strip back the artifice that was part of what made Kraftwerk so brilliant, and pay respect to the brilliant brain behind it all.
It may only be posthumous respect, but maybe that's just what suited him better. |
