"Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself" by Mark Epstein Buy this book Do you need some help with your bad attitude during this endless winter? Turn to Mark Epstein's "Advice Not Given," which blends personal anecdotes with a primer on the Buddhist eightfold path. Epstein is a psychotherapist and practitioner of Buddhist meditation who explains principles such as "right view" and "right concentration" — things you can use to get through the day, the snowstorm or whatever obstacle you have in your path. But Epstein argues that those temporary roadblocks are usually not the problem. We are our own main obstacle. “There is no reason for the untutored ego to hold sway over our lives, no reason for a permanently selfish agenda to be our bottom line,” Epstein writes in his introduction. It's a quick, smart and enlightening read. And you won't feel like a failure if you don't adopt daily meditation at the end. -Stephanie Curtis | ||
