Plus, here’s who qualifies for the new stimulus checks

Finally, finally, finally a second round of stimulus checks has been approved in Congress — and they’re totally disappointing. Check out the details on that below, as well as two things that aren’t disappointing at all: a one-time tax deduction anyone can claim, and my favorite Amazon buy of the year, which will come in extra handy as my family and I do the holidays by mail rather than in person.
We’ll be taking a holiday pause on this newsletter until January 5. Thanks so much for reading during this terrible, challenging, incredible year. See you in 2021!

If you were expecting another $1,200 from the government’s new coronavirus stimulus plan, we have bad news. Giving to charity is good in its own right, but it doesn’t hurt if you can get a tax break, too. A provision of the CARES Act ― the coronavirus stimulus package passed in March ― makes it possible to write off up to $300 in certain charitable contributions, even if you’re among the roughly 90% of people who don’t itemize your taxes. If you donated money this year, find out how to claim it: |

It’s been the year of a thousand packages, and that’s not changing anytime soon. During the pandemic I’ve spent too much money ordering things that make life at home easier, from a small treadmill to an espresso machine to vitamin D gummies and overpriced Lysol on Ebay. Naturally, the item that has made the biggest difference — the one I use more than anything but the espresso maker — is a container of box cutters I snagged for under $10. Opening my packages is a breeze, my cardboard recycling stays neat and flat and I’ve found a million other uses for them, too. Toss a box into your next Amazon order and live the package life dream. |
