CRITICAL CONDITION: You thought the first, second and third waves of the pandemic were bad? The current wave might be worse. - Louisiana broke its pandemic record for COVID-19 hospitalizations on Tuesday, with 2,112 patients admitted with the coronavirus infection. After setting a new seven-day record for COVID cases (whether hospitalized or not) on July 30, Louisiana has broken it twice in four days.
- Hospitals are buckling under the strain, with more patients and fewer staff than ever before. "You can’t just make nurses,” one doctor said.
- Medical professionals beg the public to get vaccinated. Yet on the day that Louisiana recorded its 11,000 COVID death, state Attorney General Jeff Landry advised his employees how to avoid mask mandates and vaccine requirements at their children's schools.
PHOTO FINISH: One day after New Orleans police distributed a surveillance camera photo of their suspect in a Bourbon Street shooting that wounded five people, they arrested him. Markez Jefferson, 22, was booked with attempted murder.
AW, SHUCKS: One of the most notable mansions in New Orleans, the 1859 cornstalk fence house in the Garden District, has gotten an interior makeover. The owner, who happens to be manager and producer of Paul McCartney and Andrea Bocelli, expressed humility: "These classic old New Orleans houses, big and small, you're often just the caretaker. You know you're going to have your time for a while, but ultimately you pass them on to someone else."
