At the end of The Beatles' rooftop concert in the documentary film "Let It Be," John Lennon jokingly says, "I hope we've passed the audition." By the end of LSU's appearance in the ReliaQuest Bowl, Joe Sloan or Cortez Hankton may be saying the same thing for real. When he named quarterbacks coach Sloan and wide receivers coach Hankton as co-offensive coordinators for LSU's ReliaQuest Bowl against Wisconsin, LSU coach Brian Kelly admitted he naturally thought of using the game as something an audition for both to possibly replace recently departed OC Mike Denbrock. He has left to return to Notre Dame in that same position. "For me not to evaluate the staff for those kinds of openings, I think it would be foolish," Kelly said Wednesday in Tampa, where the Tigers have set up camp to prepare for Monday's bowl game (11 a.m. CST, ESPN2). "There will be a strong consideration to the coaches that are in leadership roles right now for that position.” Neither has considerable play-calling experience, but it's a reasonable expectation that if Kelly doesn't make Sloan or Hankton offensive coordinator at LSU, someone else will at their school. And right soon. While there's intrigue over whether one or the other might wind up with the LSU OC job permanently, it's a downright mystery why freshman offensive tackle Lance Heard didn't make the trip to Florida with the Tigers. We tell you what we know about Heard's situation right here. Meanwhile, in case you missed it, LSU cornerback Duce Chestnut is back in the transfer portal. He transferred to LSU from Syracuse this year but hadn't played since early in the season. Like the Tigers, our lead LSU football writer Wilson Alexander and myself your friendly neighborhood sports columnist will be setting up camp in Tampa starting on Thursday.
