Alabama is filled with small towns, many of which have plenty of history, good eats, natural beauty and charm to offer. Often times though, these small towns get overlooked for the state’s bigger cities, so with that in mind, we recently asked our Facebook followers “What’s the most underrated small town in Alabama?” The question got hundreds of responses, making it pretty clear that many of the state’s small towns -- from Mentone to Sylacauga and everywhere in-between -- deserve a little more love. Alabama’s beloved Golden Eagle Syrup: A sweet story nearly 100 years in the making Folks around Fayette in northwest-central Alabama take plenty of hometown pride in the sweet, golden syrup that has earned their small town of 4,200 the nickname “Syrup City.” As well they should. “It’s a 100-year-old company,” Temple Bowling, a co-owner of Fayette’s venerable Golden Eagle Syrup Co., says. “Those aren’t sitting around everywhere.” Read about Golden Eagle's history here. |
