Good morning, and welcome to the Saints Insider newsletter for July 19. Today, let's chat about some players you are likely very familiar with, but who maybe do not get as much shine as they should across the NFL landscape. Friends, I'm talking about underrated players, and there's really only one place to start that conversation with regard to the New Orleans Saints. Demario Davis is one of the NFL's best linebackers. I know it. You know it. People who get paid to talk about the game know it. People who get paid to scout the game, coach the game, and assemble the rosters know it. So what gives? Why is it that Davis has never made a single Pro Bowl roster? Why is it that he often gets left out of the conversation when it comes to the discussing the NFL's elite defensive players? Personally, I don't understand it. And while it's not exactly my job to evangelize on Davis' behalf so he can acquire a little more national prestige, I will point out this glaring disrespect whenever I see it because Davis has certainly earned far more attention than it seems he's gotten during his superb five-year run with the Saints. Of course, he's not the only under-looked, under-appreciated and underrated Saints player My colleague Patrick Magee and I took a spin through the roster and identified three more who probably should get more credit. Madden ratings are outGamers, rejoice! You now know whether virtual Deonte Harty would beat out virtual Chris Olave in a digital footrace. EA Sports released its first Madden 23 player ratings Monday, declaring Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams the Best Wide Receiver Slash Tight End in Video Game Football. To really drum up interest, EA will slow-roll the full positional rankings throughout this week. Can't wait! (Where's that sarcasm font button?) Anyway, if you're curious about what the Madden ratings gurus think about the Saints' new-look receiver corps, you can check that out here. Aside from wondering why Jarvis Landry had the lowest Kick Power rating of any Saints receiver (what has Jarvis done to you to make you seek such mean spirited retribution, EA Sports?), I can't say I quibble too much with these ratings that I will surely forget in one week's time. Social post o' the dayHere at the Saints Insider newsletter, we're going to make a concerted effort to focus more on C.J. Gardner-Johnson's football ability than his pot-stirring ability this season. Promise. That said, sometimes you just need to respect the defensive back's pot-stirring game, as evidenced here when he took a veiled shot at Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans. Here's a refresher for context if you need it. I am definitely here for Petty July Tweets. That's all we have for the day. Thanks as always for your support. Cheers, Luke Johnson |
