Lions start the season with sensational win |
Sunday night nerves, you have been missed. The Detroit Lions secured a huge overtime win against the Los Angeles Rams last night. No worries, my nails will grow back by next week. How it happened: Jake Bates forced overtime on a 32-yard field in the final seconds of regulation, then the Lions finally flexed the running game that had been missing all night, handing off the ball seven times in eight plays, the last of which was a David Montgomery 1-yard plunge that sent them to the thrilling victory. |

These are the 10 most commonly stolen vehicles in Michigan |
The Hyundai Elantra was the most-commonly stolen vehicle nationally in 2023 with 48,445 thefts reported. But in Michigan, the Elantra was just the sixth-most stolen ride, coming in behind five vehicles made by Stellantis brands Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and RAM. Michigan’s most commonly stolen vehicle in 2023 was the Jeep Grand Cherokee, with 1,357 thefts reported. Here are the top 10 vehicles reported stolen in Michigan in 2023. To know: Road construction and special events will require more than 50 additional closures this week throughout Michigan. Transportation entertainment: The SS Milwaukee Clipper has lived many lives over her 120 years − so you know “the Queen of the Great Lakes” has stories to share. For the first time since she returned to Muskegon, the ship is offering haunted tours. |

This is what many business owners are warning will happen if the state legislature doesn’t stop an impending minimum wage hike and the elimination of the tip credit system. We want to hear what you think about the change. Be aware: Eggs sold in Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin have been recalled after they infected 65 people with salmonella. Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC recalled the eggs on Sept. 6 that were sold to stores and restaurants labeled with “Milo’s Poultry Farms” or “Tony’s Fresh Market.” Eyesore to economic engine: The former GM stamping plant site in Wyoming is set to see major redevelopment in the coming years as two companies, Corewell Health and Benteler Automotive, have announced plans to occupy the 75-acre site. The reactivation is expected to have a massive impact, bringing hundreds of jobs to the Grand Rapids suburb. |

Michigan stopped issuing Section 8 housing vouchers, closed waitlist |
The Michigan State Housing Development Authority, which administers the Housing Choice Voucher program, received federal funding in May that is “short of keeping up with rising costs in Michigan,” a news release said. As a result, the state agency cannot issue new vouchers and closed the waitlist to new applicants, including to those experiencing homelessness. President Joe Biden traveled to the Ann Arbor-area on Friday to sign what the White House has described as a landmark “Good Jobs” executive order on investing in America and American workers. With the order, the Biden-Harris administration is the first in history to specify a clear list of labor standards for federal agencies to prioritize, according to the White House. In court: Legal battles continued last week for the entities at the center of the mid-Michigan dam reconstruction saga, with the Heron Cove Association filing an appellate brief in an ongoing squabble between the association and the Four Lakes Task Force. |

The numbers: If campsites across the Mitten State felt packed this year it’s because they were. It was another banner year for overnight stays at Michigan’s state parks. In the last five years parks have seen a dramatic and steady increase in visitors. In 2021, the DNR set a new record for the whole year with more than 1.2 million overnight stays. This year won’t have a fair year-over-year comparison because 6,000 campsites will be unavailable while they undergo construction upgrades. More in tourism: The nearly 1 million visitors who came to Pictured Rocks last year spent more than $45 million. A new National Park Service report estimates $45,770,000 was spent in communities near the park after 910,939 people visited Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in 2023. The big winner: We love Harbor Springs’ charming downtown, bookended by Petoskey on one side and the gateway to the Tunnel of Trees on the other. So it’s no surprise this gem of a town has been named the Best Small Lake Town in the United States by the Travel + Leisure publication. |
