For the past twenty years, dozens of books, conferences, and websites have focused on how faith and work relate to one another. These resources have offered an encouraging perspective to many who felt as though their careers were less valuable than those of, say, a minister or missionary. Now, David L. Bahnsen writes in a recent CT article, it’s time to deepen the faith and work conversation even more. Pointing to theologian Abraham Kuyper, Bahnsen points out that the reason our work matters to God is that “all of the created order belongs to Christ.” In other words, our work matters to God because God loves the worker. “Our foundation for work and calling is always about the human person,” writes Bahnsen. “God cares about the work because he cares about the worker, and in a distinctly Christian anthropology, we are not dealing merely with producers and consumers and unit economics but with human beings made by God with purpose and dignity.” Whether we work in our homes, the marketplace, or professional ministry, may we remember that our labor is valuable beyond what it produces. The God of all creation honors our work because of his great love for us, the workers. |
