Hi there, This week, tensions rose in Honduras following the presidential election vote with both sides declaring victory before the final tally. The final count has dragged on for days, while supporters of opposition political newcomer Salvador Nasralla are claiming voter fraud and have clashed with law enforcement. The current political and electoral crisis is a consequence of the lack of long-overdue reforms that have not been addressed by Honduran politicians. Changing the current situation will require the Honduran political class to adopt profound, structural changes to the electoral system. Here are our recommendations on what needs to happen. Trust in government is low across the whole of Latin America: nearly two thirds of people surveyed in the region said corruption was getting worse, and more than half said their government was doing a bad job at addressing it. Today, Argentina takes over the presidency of the G20 from Germany. It is vital that it places anti-corruption measures at the heart of the G20 agenda. If it can do this, it will take a step towards re-establishing trust in governments across the region. 2018 will see various high stakes national elections and international summits around the world. It is critical that governments and intergovernmental bodies act transparently and adopt strong anti-corruption measures to ensure accountability and fairness to citizens. |
