Mike DeWine sworn in as governor of Ohio: Flanked by family and close friends, Mike DeWine became Ohio’s 70th governor shortly after midnight today in a private ceremony at his farm near Cedarville. The Republican didn’t waste any time putting his stamp on the state. Immediately after signing the oath of office inside a packed farmhouse across the drive from his main home, DeWine signed six executive orders. “We said we were going to hit the ground running,” he said. DeWine, 72, will again be sworn in at a public inauguration later today at the Statehouse and conclude his weekend of activities with the inaugural gala at the Statehouse tonight. Read more. Lower state report card grades open door for expansion of vouchers, charter schools: Tougher state tests and lower grades for schools and districts across Ohio could lead to a massive expansion of vouchers and charter schools. That’s sure to start debates in Columbus, where a move to expand vouchers in 2017 earned some support before failing. There’s also a long-running controversy over whether charter schools and vouchers lead to better learning for students. Data and research on both counts has been mixed. The Ohio School Boards Association, which opposes vouchers already, objects to adding them to more areas. Read more. Local advocates stand up for homeless during Homeless Stand Down event: Just days after Cleveland Metroparks ordered the eviction of about 10 people living in an encampment under the Detroit-Superior Bridge as they prepare to build a new park, homeless advocates came together for Hands On Northeast Ohio’s Homeless Stand Down, an annual event that provides resources for people in Cleveland who are low-income or homeless. The five-hour event usually serves about 1,500 people, providing clothing, hot meals, health screenings, haircuts and access to community resources. Read more. Browns hire offensive, defensive coordinators: New Browns coach Freddie Kitchens hired former Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken for the same position here and former Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks as defensive coordinator. He’s also hired former Packers offensive line coach/run game coordinator James Campen as associate head coach/offensive line coach. The coordinators and other assistants are expected to be announced this morning, before an introductory news conference for Kitchens. Read more.
