Burning River: For decades, the Cuyahoga River was an open sewer. The river caught fire periodically through the first half of the 20th century, until the final fire in 1969. Job offer: A Michigan prison warden applied to be Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish’s chief of staff 12 days after the county had revoked an offer to hire him as the jail director, cleveland.com’s Courtney Astolfi reports. The May 6 application from Saginaw Correctional Facility Warden O’Bell Thomas Winn cited Winn’s desire to advance his career and made no mention of the county having revoked the offer to hire him in April as jail director. Sign up here Drug suits: Lawyers for cities and counties suing drug companies have proposed a class-action structure to negotiate thousands of pending federal lawsuits over the nation’s opioid epidemic, cleveland.com’s Eric Heisig reports. Veteran marijuana: The number of U.S. military veterans who are registered Ohio medical marijuana patients increased by 37 percent in the past two months to 2,677 people, cleveland.com’s Laura Hancock reports. The state keeps track of veterans because they can qualify for a fee reduction of 50 percent when registering as patients for medical marijuana.
