Illegal ballot: Bratenahl Village Council members broke state law in 2015 when they used a secret ballot to elect a council member to a leadership position, the Ohio Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Wednesday. Cleveland.com’s Andrew Tobias reports the court ruled in favor of Pat Meade, a community journalist who sued in 2016 over how village council chose its president pro tempore, who fills in for the mayor when the mayor is unable to perform his or her duties. Football hazing: Four Berea-Midpark High School football players are charged in connection with the sexual assault of several classmates during a hazing incident at a football camp on the Case Western Reserve University campus, cleveland.com’s Adam Ferrise reports. Jabriel Williams, 18, was charged with rape, sexual battery, unlawful restraint, hazing, tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. New UA leader: The University of Akron’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Wednesday to choose Gary Miller to be the university’s 18th president. Online threats: Police in Mahoning County made a quick arrest of a man charged with making online threats against federal law-enforcement agents because they feared he would commit a mass shooting, cleveland.com’s Eric Heisig reports. A search warrant affidavit from Boardman Township referred to 18-year-old Justin Olsen’s posts on a social media platform as “obviously terroristic” in light of the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso. Facial recognition: Attorney General Dave Yost on Wednesday announced that law enforcement will now have to undergo training in order to use the state’s controversial facial-recognition software to identify suspects. Cleveland.com’s Jeremy Pelzer reports that Yost said the change wasn’t because of concerns raised about how many states, including Ohio, have offered access to driver’s license photos to the FBI and other federal agencies. Death penalty: A Cuyahoga County Judge has imposed the death sentence on a man who stabbed two people in their Parma Heights home and then tried to hire a man to burn their bodies in a failed cover-up in 2017.
