Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement

The National Media Awards Foundation is pleased to announce that Jennifer Varkonyi, publisher of Maisonneuve, and Jean-Paul Gagné, publisher emeritus of Les Affaires, have been honored as recipients of the 2023 Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. This unique occurrence of a double distinction is due to the postponement of the Outstanding Achievement Award in 2021 and 2022, amid pandemic-related restrictions on in-person events. Jennifer and Jean-Paul have demonstrated dedication, leadership, and passion that have made an indelible mark on journalism and enriched the Canadian media landscape.

We congratulate them on their well-deserved recognition and celebrate their exceptional achievements.

Top Nominees

Maclean's is leading the pack with an impressive 18 nominations, followed closely by The Walrus and Toronto Life, with 13 nominations each. Nouveau Projet received eight nominations, while Chatelaine, Cottage Life, and Maisonneuve all received seven each. BESIDE rounds out the top nominees with six nominations.

Individual Nominee Highlights

• Eva Holland has an impressive four nominations in four separate categories; “Giant Mine’s Toxic Legacy,” published in The Walrus, is nominated for Long-Form Feature Writing and Personal Journalism, and “The Hardest Climb,” published in Maclean’s, is nominated for Feature Writing and in Profiles
• Omar Mouallem has an impressive three nominations in three separate categories; “A Monster in the Classroom,” published in Maclean’s, is nominated for Investigative Reporting and Long-Form Feature Writing: 6000+, while “Canada’s Most Famous Chaplain,” published in Broadview, is a finalist in Profiles
• Aviva Coopersmith is nominated for the prestigious Best Emerging Writer award for “The Lie That Made Me,” published in Toronto Life; Coopersmith is also nominated in the Personal Journalism category for the same article.
• Catherine Dubé is nominated in Feature Writing and in Long-Form Feature Writing, for “En avant pour l'environnement !” and “Violence conjugale : prévenir le pire,” respectively; both articles were published in Châtelaine.
• Fabrice de Pierrebourg is nominated twice, for “Aux armes, Ukrainiens !” in Long-Form Feature Writing and for “Voyage au Talibanistan” in Photo Essay and Photojournalism; both articles were published in L’actualité.
• Mathilde Roy has two nominations in Service Journalism, for “Panier d'épicerie” and “Déjouez le yoyo hormonal”; both articles were published in Protegez-vous
• Michelle Cyca’s much-read Maclean’s cover story “The Curious Case of Gina Adams” is nominated for Long-Form Feature Writing: 6000+ and for Investigative Reporting
• Nicholas Hune-Brown is also nominated twice—for Long-Form Feature Writing: 6000+ for “The $11-Billion Subway War,” published in Toronto Life, and in Profiles for “The Real MVP,” published in Report on Business Magazine
• Ray Ford’s work in Cottage Life has two nominations—“You're in for a World of Dirt” is a finalist in Service Journalism while “Friendly Fires” is nominated for Short Feature Writing
• Shannon Proudfoot’s profiles of two prominent political leaders, “The Ringleader” and “The Fixer,” are both finalists in the Profiles category; both were published in Maclean’s
• Wade Hudson’s work is nominated twice for Portrait Photography — “The Interview: Gabor Maté,” published in Maclean’s, and “Elamin Abdelmahmoud,” published in Queen’s Alumni Review
