The US Is Escalating Its Role in Yemen
Help Us Cover It
When President Biden came into office, he vowed to end support for Saudi Arabia's "offensive" operations in Yemen and said he would work to find a diplomatic solution to the war. But over a year later, the U.S. is still supporting the Saudi-led coalition and is now escalating its role in the war.
In the wake of recent Houthi attacks on the United Arab Emirates, the US has been intervening to intercept missiles for the Emirates, and has deployed F-22s and the USS Cole to the UAE. Also, at the behest of the UAE, the US is considering redesignating the Houthis as a terrorist organization. That move that would do little but push more innocent Yemenis into starvation.
The US frames such support as "defensive" in nature. But the Houthis wouldn't be attacking the UAE if not for Abu Dhabi's role in the U.S.-backed coalition that has been waging war on Yemen since 2015. The mainstream media usually miss this crucial context.
The Saudi air campaign on Yemen has also escalated, making January the most violent month for civilians in the country since 2016. The brutal air war would not be possible if not for the fact that the US provides maintenance support for Riyadh's air force.
Despite Biden's steps to increase the US role in Yemen, the war is not making many headlines. Due to the lack of coverage, few Americans understand just how responsible their government is for the conflict, which the UN calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
At Antiwar.com, covering the brutal war in Yemen is one of our top priorities. And informing people about a war is the first step in working to end it. But we need your help.
After over 25 years of advocating non-intervention, Antiwar.com is still entirely reader funded.
