TRASH TURNAROUND: New Orleans turned a corner this weekend in its battle against the mounting piles of festering garbage that have dotted the sidewalks of so many neighborhoods since Hurricane Ida almost a month ago. What changed? The city's $20 million emergency contract brought in the cavalry over the last several days, and the results have not gone unnoticed.
CARNIVAL FORECAST: October is shaping up to be the month when the city's conversation about Mardi Gras 2022 will heat up, as local crews approach the point when spending and planning need to start if Carnival is going to happen. Mayor LaToya Cantrell says she appreciates the season's importance to the city, but said preventing the spread of COVID-19 remains a top priority. The path forward may come down to what public health measures krewes are willing to advocate or enforce.
