The Front Page: The trash fairy finally arrives, the carnival question, and more

By Chad Calder | Staff writer

TRASH TURNAROUND: New Orleans turned a corner this weekend in its battle against the mounting piles of festering garbage that have dotted the sidewalks of so many neighborhoods since Hurricane Ida almost a month ago. What changed? The city's $20 million emergency contract brought in the cavalry over the last several days, and the results have not gone unnoticed.

CARNIVAL FORECAST: October is shaping up to be the month when the city's conversation about Mardi Gras 2022 will heat up, as local crews approach the point when spending and planning need to start if Carnival is going to happen. Mayor LaToya Cantrell says she appreciates the season's importance to the city, but said preventing the spread of COVID-19 remains a top priority. The path forward may come down to what public health measures krewes are willing to advocate or enforce.

BEST FOOT FORWARD: After revealing Pelicans star Zion Williamson has been rehabbing a fractured foot since this summer, the team's media day featured reassuring talk of Williamson's commitment to New Orleans, his relationship lead basketball executive David Griffin and the prospects for success with new head coach Willie Green.

TAYSOM TALKS: A day after playing a critical role in their win over the Patriots, Saints back-up quarterback and Swiss army knife Taysom Hill talks about his unsuccessful bid to win the starting QB job during training camp, and what that means going forward.

As always, thanks for starting your day with us on The Front Page and on NOLA.com.
