‘The man is a master’: ‘Doctor Who’ showrunner rightfully praises one of NuWho’s most underrated Doctors

The Doctor's TARDIS in space in 'Doctor Who'

20 years. It’s been 20 years since the BBC resurrected Doctor Who, and the Doctor and their companions have been on countless historical and intergalactic adventures since. The current Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth, has brought the show into a new era of distribution and storytelling—that’s why his first season is sometimes called season 1 rather than season 14—but we can’t forget about the man who kick-started it all: Christopher Eccleston.

Though David Tennant’s Tenth and Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor are most commonly loved and praised, Christopher Eccleston’s Ninth was the one who revitalized Doctor Who for the NuWho era, and he did so with undeniable wit, charm, and humor. Before I started watching the 2005 series, I’d never seen an episode of Doctor Who, but Eccleston’s infectious enthusiasm on screen, both for his adventures and his new companion, Rose (Billie Piper), drew me in, and I haven’t been able to let go of the show since. Who can forget that enormous smile?

As expected, Trump’s approval ratings are dropping ‘bigly’

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 24: U.S. President Donald Trump calls on a reporter to ask a question during a cabinet meeting at the White House on March 24, 2025 in Washington, DC. There was much to say about President Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January. Three months later, even the Republicans’ excitement for his second term has dampened due to a series of questionable executive decisions.

Multiple news outlets and research centers report that the president’s approval rating has dropped. This isn’t exclusive to polls conducted in outlets that normally oppose Trump. Even Fox News, an outlet known to speak highly of the president, indicates that Trump is unpopular due to his economic policies.

Adam Kinzinger roasts ‘try hard dork’ Pete Hegseth as he scrambles to clean up his own mess

If it weren’t such a flagrant and shocking breach of national security, the recent furor surrounding Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and his pals would be quite relatable.

After all, who hasn’t accidentally added the wrong person to an email chain or Slack group at work? A slip of the finger, or just a minor brain fart, can lead to some funny situations. However, what Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Co. did by discussing confidential war plans over the commercial messaging service Signal and accidentally adding a journalist to their group text was not simply something that will one day become a hilarious anecdote to tell over drinks, as much as some conservative voices would like that to be the case.

The cast of 'Berlin' in a promotional image for Netflix

Spin-offs and prequels based on specific characters don’t always work out, but the Spanish-language show Berlin does have something special going for it.

The Money Heist prequel follows the character Berlin (real name in the show: Andres de Fonollosa, played by Pedro Alonso) as he attempts a jewelry heist. Confusingly, it is primarily set in Paris, and while it maintains much of the tension that made Money Heist so watchable, it really delves into Berlin’s motivations and emotions in a way that we haven’t seen in the main show.

Hillary Clinton slams ‘dumb’ Trump administration over Signal scandal

While the Trump administration has often prided itself on “unconventional” methods, letting military secrets slip in a messaging app is taking that too far. Thankfully, Hillary Clinton delivered the mic-drop moment we all needed in her latest op-ed for The New York Times.

March 24, 2025, has gone down as another blunder-filled day for the Trump administration, as the United States faced a shocking breach of national security. Confidential information about impending military operations was leaked—not by hackers or spies, but via a group chat on the Signal messaging app. Yes, you read that right: a group chat. And who’s to blame for this amateur-hour debacle? None other than the very officials tasked with managing the affairs of one of the most powerful nations on Earth.

Books, Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, Rebecca Yarros, Romantasy

All ‘Iron Flame’ spicy chapters, confirmed

So, the hype got to you, huh? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. After all, Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series is one the most popular adult fantasy series of the 21st century, with its third novel, Onyx Storm, becoming the fastest-selling adult fantasy novel in 20 years (it sold 2.7 million copies in its first week of release).

Before you can dive into Onyx Storm, though, you’ll first have to read Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, as they set up the all-important and overwhelming romantic relationship between the series’ protagonists, Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson, as well as the war between the Continent and the venin; dark magic wielders who steal their power from the world they inhabit.

TV, Netflix, The Residence

Netflix’s ‘The Residence’ includes one of the best love stories I’ve ever seen

The cast of 'The Residence' leaning into a doorway looking confused

When you tune into a show like Netflix’s The Residence, you’re initially tuning in to figure out the mystery, right? An executive member of staff is murdered in The White House, and you want to know how, why, and where. That, of course, makes the leading investigator, in this case, detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba), the central figure in the show. Yet she’s not necessarily the one we relate to the most.

While the series does a great job of giving us insight into Cordelia’s character beyond the usual “world’s greatest detective” label—I especially love her relationship with her nephew and how she discovered her talent for investigating—the characters we instinctually find the most relatable are the ones who work in the White House; those downstairs, rather than upstairs.

TV, BBC, BritBox, British crime dramas, Ludwig

BritBox’s ‘Ludwig’ and the enduring appeal of the amateur detective

David Mitchell as John "Ludwig" Taylor in 'Ludwig. He's wearing an red-checked apron and holding a phone to his ear.

Everyone—well, almost everyone—loves a good murder mystery, right? There’s something so satisfying about clues and context being revealed step by step, and nothing is more exciting than that moment when you think you’ve figured out the whodunit of it all before the lead detective does, whether you’re watching a TV show or reading a brand-new mystery novel. It’s a thrill! We all want to believe we’re smarter than the plot. Sometimes we are, and sometimes we aren’t. It keeps us on our toes and coming back for more.

This idea that we, the audience, can figure out the plot on our own is something we connect with in mystery fiction. That’s partly why the concept of an amateur detective appeals to us. When I say amateur, I don’t mean a newly promoted and trained detective in whatever country’s police force. I mean someone who is so singularly talented and out of left field that we have to suspend our disbelief a little to go along with the story. I’m talking about the Father Browns, the Miss Marples, the Jessica Fletchers, and the Agatha Raisins of the world. A tiny part of us would like to be like them, right?

Big on the Internet, Adam Kinzinger, Elon Musk

Adam Kinzinger shared pictures of Elon Musk that he doesn’t want you to remember

elon musk in a bad hat

So there is a theory out in the world. That theory is that Elon Musk got a hair transplant. Given the lack of confirmation, we will say that this is all rumored. There are pictures of Elon Musk from before but we cannot say anything confidently.

You know who is? Adam Kinzinger. Kinzinger, who has used his platform to attack Musk and Donald Trump every chance he gets, shared images that Musk probably doesn’t want out there in the world. Buddy, it is okay. We all have already seen them (and definitely remember them). The images in question show Musk’s hairline being significantly different than his current hair. Magic or plugs? We just don’t know!

TV, Apple TV+, Charlotte Nicado, interview, Mythic Quest

‘Go easy on us, it’ll be good’: Charlote Nicado breaks down THAT shocking ‘Mythic Quest’ moment

poppy with her belly on mythic quest

Mythic Quest season 4 has come to a close and left fans with a lot to unpack. Like the fact that THAT happened. And now we have to wait did answers???

The end of season 4 proved something I have known from the start. Poppy and Ian are meant to be together. Whether you think that means romantically or as friends and business partners, that is completely up to you. For me, I wanted to see a romantic storyline between the two and now, after the finale, we seem to be heading that way.

TV, HBO, Noah Wyle, pittsburgh, The Pitt

As a Pittsburghian, I have thoughts on the Pitt

the pitt's doctor robby standing

Hometown pride can make or break a show. Or, in the case of The Pitt, it can take a really good show and make me just a little mad about it.

So I heard whispers of the new HBO series and didn’t realize the show was set in Pittsburgh. I thought it was something else entirely. But alas, I put the show on knowing it was Noah Wyle back in a hospital and saw those yellow bridges I know so well. I was so happy! Finally, my hometown will be celebrated in all its Yinzer glory.

Will there be ‘Honey Lemon Soda’ season 2?

Kai Miura and Uka Ishimori in 'Honey Lemon Soda' anime

A delightful mix of comedy, drama, and romance, Honey Lemon Soda has already made its mark as a beloved shōjo manga. However, the success of the anime adaptation’s debut season will be the real test in determining if this sweet story continues to sparkle on screen.

Following the story of Uka Ishimori, a timid and reserved high school girl, Honey Lemon Soda delves into her journey of self-discovery at Hachimitsu High School. Her life takes a vibrant turn when she crosses paths with Kai Miura, a charming, lemon-haired boy whose popularity matches his good looks. As Uka gradually opens up, she finds herself not only gaining confidence but also falling for the boy who inspired her transformation.

The Fourth Jeju Island Raid is heading for its explosive finale on March 30, marking the end of Solo Leveling season 2. After obliterating the Ant King in episode 12, Jinwoo’s final mission is clear: save Hae-in. But once the dust settles, will our ultimate hunter return for another season of mayhem?

TV, 1923, Julia Schlaepfer, Taylor Sheridan, Yellowstone

‘Yellowstone’ and ‘1923’ love to torment characters. Especially Alex

Julia Schlaepfer as Alex Dutton in Yellowstone 1923

Shows like Yellowstone and now 1923 constantly ask us to suspend our disbelief. Do I think John Dutton could get away with that many murders in his name? No. But we pretend.

With that in mind, I am begging 1923 to allow Alex (Julia Schlapefer) to have one break. Just one. A single episode where she can just relax. Please? For my sanity and for Alex’s.

Movies, Edgar Wright, Glen Powell, Paramount Pictures, The Running Man

My most anticipated movie of 2025 just wrapped filming, let the Glen Powell excitement begin

Glen Powell and Edgar Wright celebrate the wrap of 'The Running Man'

Glen Powell is arguably one of the biggest actors around right now. That means that each new film is his is an exciting new adventure for fans. Which includes his next big film, The Running Man.

The film, directed by Edgar Wright and co-written by Wright and Michael Bacall, is an adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name. Promising to be a more accurate adaptation than the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, there is a lot to be excited about with the film. Like the fact that they wrapped production and it comes out around my birthday. All great things for me, personally.

Movies, Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men

I love Fox’s X-Men movies, but I’ve let them go—and the MCU should have done the same

Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, Hugh Jackman as Logan/Wolverine, and Patrick Stewart as Professor X in X-Men

So, the Avengers: Doomsday cast. How are we all feeling? A few surprises, some welcome returns, a startling lack of female characters, and a shocking number of former mutants. This movie could either become the pinnacle of the superhero niche or crash and burn. At this point, I honestly have no idea, and I’m trying to keep my expectations as low as possible.

Don’t get me wrong, I desperately want this to be good. I would give anything to feel as hyped about Doomsday as I did about Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. That was on a whole other level. However, while I am currently obsessing over Marvel’s more grounded, street-level output (Daredevil: Born Again is a gem and I’m genuinely excited for Thunderbolts*) the idea of returning to the mess of the Multiverse is frankly, quite exhausting, especially now that we know just how many of Fox’s X-Men characters will be a part of the incursion-infested circus.

TV, detective series, Netflix, The Residence

Will there be ‘The Residence’ season 2?

Uzo Aduba holding a pair of binoculars as Detective Cordelia Cupp in 'The Residence'

There’s a new detective on the block. In Netflix’s new Shondaland-produced murder mystery series The Residence, Uzo Aduba portrays detective Cordelia Cupp, the next generation of the “world’s best detective.” In this show, though, she’s not solving any ordinary murder mystery—she’s solving the death of one of The White House’s most important members of staff.

Across eight episodes, viewers learn about the inner, Upstairs, Downstairs-like workings of The White House and the eternal power struggle between the haves and the have-nots. It’s twisty and funny, and the cast has great chemistry. Will there be a second season, though?
