News, donald trump, tiktok, tiktok ban By Vanessa Esguerra on Sun,2:02 Social media users are grieving the early enforcement of the TikTok ban in the U.S. While TikTok hopes to negotiate with President-elect Donald Trump, social media users remain suspicious of the incoming administration. TikTok “went dark” on Sunday, January 19, following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold federal law. As a result of this verdict, U.S. residents shouldn’t be able to download TikTok from the app store or browse its content. Although social media users were expecting the ban to happen on January 20, many have reported as early as January 19 that they were unable to access the app. The initial closing message informed users that TikTok will “work to restore” its services in the U.S. Read More > Anime, Ash Ketchum, Pokémon (franchise) By El Kuiper on Sun,1:38 The Pokémon anime has been around for a very long time – almost 30 years. Its (former) protagonist, Ash Ketchum, has amassed quite a collection of Pokémon to travel with and call his partners during that time. But exactly how many Pokémon did Ash own by the end of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series? More than 80 Pokémon (yes, that includes the 30 Tauros he caught in Kanto’s Safari Zone), and every single one of those Pokémon is covered here. Here is every partner that Ash owns and has bonded with over the long years of his journeying across the Pokémon world, including those he released at some point—after all, as the final episodes of Ash’s Pokémon journey in the anime proved, his bond with them will never waver. Read More > TV, Apple TV+, interview, Patricia Arquette, Severance By Laura Pollacco on Sun,9:19 Severance, one of the most acclaimed series of 2022, is finally back after an almost three-year hiatus. Talking to The Mary Sue, Patricia Arquette, who earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of intrusive manager Harmony Cobel, discussed how she’s moving on from that season 1 cliffhanger. Severance, the show that truly gets us to consider our work-life balance, was a hit when the first season came out in 2o22. The second season took its sweet time, but, as they say, good things come to those who wait. Arquette is back as Cobel, though the character is questioning her allegiance to Lumon—and who can blame her? Read More > Movies, Better Man, interview, Robbie Williams By Amanda Landwehr on Sun,7:33 Director Michael Gracey’s latest musical, Better Man, is many things. But if you can put the whole CGI monkey thing aside, you’ll realize that it is, first and foremost, a love story. And for stars Raechelle Banno and Jonno Davies, the best things really do happen when you’re dancing. Better Man—a.k.a. that one movie with the singing chimpanzee—tells the true story of British pop artist Robbie Williams’ rise to fame, from his time in the ’90s boyband Take That to his wildly successful career as a solo act. But despite Williams being the subject of this particular biopic, he’s not actually the man in front of the camera for most of its runtime; that honor instead goes to Jonno Davies, who handles the more physical elements of the character, which, yes, include those now-viral dance sequences—something he and co-star Raechelle Banno had quite a memorable (and violent?) experience of while filming. Read More > Big on the Internet, RedNote, tiktok, Xiaohongshu By Alexandria Lopez on Sun,7:19 With TikTok officially banned in the United States on Sunday, January 19, Americans have migrated to China’s top social media platform, RedNote. But people are not showing the platform the respect it deserves. Ever since it was announced TikTok would be banned in the United States, many have turned to RedNote (also known as Xiaohongshu, XHS, or Little Red Book). The app became so popular that it shot to number one on the Apple App Store in the U.S. Chinese users have been extremely welcoming, dubbing TikTok users who downloaded RedNote as “TikTok refugees” and showcasing their excitement over this possible exchange of cultures. However, it didn’t take long for Americans to ruin the app by ignoring Chinese users’ advice on what not to post. Read More > News, Politics, donald trump By Kahron Spearman on Sun,2:43 Donald Trump’s decision to move his inauguration indoors leaves thousands of his most devoted (and paying) supporters out in the cold—literally and figuratively. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies announced Friday that the “vast majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend the ceremonies in person.” You’re suckers and losers, and I’m not the one saying it to you; Donald Trump is. pic.twitter.com/qpjn1nSaTj Read More > News, Politics, Elon Musk, politics, Twitter By Amanda Landwehr on Sun,1:48 So much for being a “free speech absolutist.” Read More > TV, BBC, British crime dramas, ITV By El Kuiper on Sat,1:11 Now, there’s been a lot of talk about Hollywood’s current love of remakes and reboots. Banking on something that’s already been successful once—or twice, in some cases—is always a safe bet. In today’s world, familiarity feels easy and comforting, and nostalgia is a powerful tool. I get it, though I wish we’d see more original ideas being produced, too. The thing is, Hollywood isn’t the only one with this issue. The Brits, too, are big fans of remakes, though it feels slightly more overwhelming now than ever before. Four new high-profile remakes (that we know of) will premiere on BBC, ITV, BritBox, and PBS Masterpiece this year alone, including the Bergerac remake, Lynley, Maigret, and The Forsyte Saga. All Creatures Great & Small is still going strong, too, and while the new All Creatures is undoubtedly one of the most heartwarming dramas currently on TV, it is still undeniably a remake. Read More > TV, Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel Cinematic Universe By El Kuiper on Sat,10:20 Now that the first official Daredevil: Born Again trailer is out, I can feel myself itching to start a rewatch. Daredevil is, by far, one of my favorite series of all time. Few shows, let alone superhero shows, have made me feel the same joy, terror, stress, sadness, and general fondness as those original three seasons. I was devastated when Netflix declined to renew the show for season 4. When it became clear Disney+ was working to resurrect Matt Murdock’s story, I was elated, or at least, I was, until it was revealed that the original plan was to strip the series of almost everything that made it so great. Thankfully, though, Kevin Feige and the powers that be soon realized that was, to put it bluntly, an inordinately stupid idea, and the result is Daredevil: Born Again, airing on Disney+ on March 4. Read More > TV, Noel Fielding, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin By Sarah Barrett on Sat,7:12 The Noel Fielding-starring highwayman comedy The Completely Made-Up Adventures Of Dick Turpin dropped on Apple TV+ last year and it was a fun watch. It didn’t set the world on fire but provided a good showcase of Fielding’s comedic talents. Now, however, it’s been canceled under bizarre circumstances. Fielding, who also served as co-writer and executive producer, has gone AWOL. British tabloid newspaper The Sun had all the details first. When the cast and crew returned to work after a Christmas break, they were reportedly told the show was on hold due to “the illness of a key cast member.” That’s Fielding, but no one seems to know what’s happened, what the illness is, and why he isn’t returning to work. The Sun claims he has gone to France, but no reason for this has been given. But regardless of whether or not a second season sees the light of day, you can’t deny that the Skeleton Crew finale was exceedingly simplistic—and that’s a good thing. Warning! Spoilers ahead for Skeleton Crew season 1, episode 8, “The Real Good Guys.” Read More > News, donald trump, tiktok By Sarah Fimm on Sat,4:20 TikTok’s days in America are sadly drawing to a close, but one Republican sees a bright side to the looming ban: maybe MAGA will stop talking about China. “Shut up about China” writes former Republican Representative Alex Kinzinger in an open letter to MAGA on X. “With Trump inviting the TIKTOK CEO… it is clear Trump is absolutely NOT concerned with China and their spying.” The invitation in question is the one Trump extended to Shou Chew, the Singaporean CEO of ByteDance subsidiary TikTok, who was offered a front row seat at Trump’s Inauguration. Read More > News, Politics, DEI, donald trump, FBI By Sarah Fimm on Sat,3:01 On the heels of Trump’s election win, the FBI shut down its DEI office. According to Donald Trump, that isn’t good enough. In a post on Truth Social, the president-elect demanded that the FBI “preserve and retain” all of the documents previously possessed by the shuttered office. “The reason is, CORRUPTION” Trump explained as the impetus for his decision. Trump took a few parting shots at the DEI office, saying it”never should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago.” Read More > News, Politics, donald trump By Sarah Fimm on Sat,2:19 Donald Trump intends to see his plans to deport millions and raise the cost of living for millions more to the very end, even if he has to skirt Congress to do it. In a private meeting with Senate Republicans, Trump told lawmakers that he intends to “press the limits of his presidential authority” in order to fulfill his promises of mass deportations and steep tariffs in the United States. In order to enact his plans, the president-elect has prepared over 100 executive orders to be issued during his first day in office. Trump has frequently touted his “Day One” plans to the press, announcing that he would enact sweeping changes to the immigration system, end the war in Ukraine, and pardon rioters who took part in the Jan. 6th attack on the Capitol building in the first 24 hours of his presidency. Read More > News, Politics, Bernie Sanders, Scott Bessent By Olivia Rolls on Sat,1:03 President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Secretary of the Treasury, billionaire Scott Bessent, is in hot water after plainly stating during his January 16 confirmation hearing that he doesn’t think the U.S. federal minimum wage should be raised. As it stands, the federal minimum wage remains just $7.25 per hour. Some states have fought to raise local minimum wages to $15 with success in recent years, but we haven’t seen an increase at a federal level since 2009, leaving millions of Americans to fall through the cracks in states with unlivable wages. There was no better official to raise the question of upping this number during Bessent’s confirmation hearing than Senator Bernie Sanders, who has long positioned himself as a champion of the working class and was among the first to sound the alarm on the formation of an oligarchy in our current government, well before President Joe Biden echoed the sentiment in his farewell address. Read More > News, Politics, donald trump, Donald Trump Jr., Greenland By Sarah Fimm on Sat,12:03 Donald Trump wants Greenland, but despite what the president-elect would have you believe, Greenland doesn’t feel the same about him. Donald Trump’s first son recently paid a visit to the island, landing mere hours after his father pledged to “Make Greenland Great Again.” Donald Trump Jr. was greeted by a crowd of MAGA-hat wearing Trump supporters, who cheered as he stepped off the plane in Greenland’s capital city of Nuuk. The younger Trump told reporters that he came not as an ambassador, but as a tourist, hopeful “to see a lot of the sights, talk to some people and have a good time.” Donald Trump Jr. took the crowd to lunch at the Hotel Hans Egede, and later posed for a photo op in front of the hotel’s namesake, a Danish missionary widely seen as a symbol of colonialism on the island. The Greenlanders at the scene didn’t seem to mind, and Trump Jr. handed out “Make Greenland Great Again” hats to the gleeful crowd. Read More > News, Politics, donald trump, Inauguration Day, Jimmy Carter By Sarah Fimm on Fri,11:07 Donald Trump’s Inauguration is only a few days away—and unlike his first, this one is happening indoors. In a post on Truth Social, the president-elect announced that he had “ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985.” Trump appears to have included the bit about Reagan in order to draw a comparison between himself and the much mythologized president, widely seen as one of the greatest Republican leaders in United States history. That braggadocious comparison was likely made to distract from the real reason: “also because of very cold weather,” Trump added. Read More > |
